Guest hunter333
ok, so my first time out deer hunting with a 12ga slug shotgun. My dad and i walked past a 50-60 yrd wide thicket and about 150-200 yards long full of mini trees that you could barely get through. i walk to the begining(front end of thicket and see at least 1 DOZEN Rubs. So my first time out im pretty excited, i tell my dad to go to the other end and attempt to push his way through towards me to push a buck or doe out. (in the meantime we heard splashing throughout this dense thicket since it was somewhat marshland and was on the edge of a huge lake) So im standing there and am kinda just gun halfway mounted(should have been sitting against a tree in some cover) and i start to hear a little rustle and movement about 10 yards away on the edge of this marshy thicket and brush. I didnt mount my gun and point because, if it was my dad he would have yelled at me for pointing the gun at him. Then a quarter of a way of his body, out walks a buck, at least a 8-pointer (could have been 10). and looks around for a couple seconds, now i was in full camo scentlok and a blaze orange hat with a camo face cover. And this deer out of no-where stares me dead on in the eyes, ( i was also down -wind, i dont move a muscle, and it just takes off running through, then out of the thicket, i blasted one a foot leading him in the thicket but it was too dense to make it through was my conclusion. then my gun jammed and i didnt get a second shot off when he ran in front of me about 15-20 yards away with a clear shot. The one that got away i thought, even though i was excited to even see one, let alone a big buck( i also wasnt sure if it caught onto my doe estrous wick hanging from a tree blowing towards me about halfway down the thicket. But regardless, i missed him. I would appreciate any tips for my future hunts or what i should do next time to be more succesful. thanks
gitcha_some
Re: first one, big buck if hes that close it doesnt really matter to lead him much...if a bucks about 20 yards away and bolting just put it right on his shoulder cuz even if it does drift back youll get him right in the hearts
