woodsman2230
Last sat I was hunting the last day of the PA archery season. I was set up over a nice scrape on the 100 acres behind my house. I got into the woods at about 6 then at 7:30 I see a person in orange walking down past our safety zone signs. I asked if I could help him with anything and he told my that he stuck a buck back there last night with good blood for a while then it just stopped. I asked him how big it was and he told me he thought it was a little seven point. Keep in mind that the 4 point on one side AR is in full effect in this area. I thought well he should have known exactly how big it was before he shot but I didnt say anything. Then I asked him if mybe he hit it back a little far and it just stopped bleeding and died somewhere. He had no idea where he hit it. I was kind of upset with him. I looked down close to my house in some really thick stuff but I didnt find it. So I left and thought about hunting somewhere else. IMO before a person shoots at a buck in this area they should know exactly how many points it has because I find a lot of deer around after the season that somebody shoots, realizes that it isint legal and just leaves i there. But thats just my opinion. Was I wrong to be upset with him about not knowing how big it was or where he hit it?
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: What do you guys think? How can you get in bow range and not know how big a buck is? Heck, I can tell you how many points he has, what he'll score (+ or - a few) and how old he is before I shoot.
johnf
Re: What do you guys think? I honestly don't look at the whole rack before I shoot. I look at body size and make sure it's got at least 4 pts on one side. (we have a 3pt rule) I had a very large(200lbs+) 3pt come right under me a few weeks ago and I was trying to will points out of his head. I bet he was a 3 1/2 year old by his body size, but the bow never came out of my lap. We should always make sure it's at least legal befor we even think about shooting. sskybnd
Re: What do you guys think? thats what i would say the average bow shot is 20 to 30 yards, and sometimes closer. i dont know how he didnt know how many points he had and for not knowing where he hit, at that range you pretty much know if you made a good shot or you shot a little far back. either way i think he wasnt telling you all he knew. mike
Re: What do you guys think? well the shot placement might be tough to tell but the size of the buck should be known. i know with my bow at 15yds i can not see the arrow in flight its just movin to fast. Doc
Re: What do you guys think? Well, if he thought it was a seven point, there is a pretty good chance that he saw 4 on one side. At least there is no reason to automatically assume that he didn't. As far as not knowing exactly where he hit it, I can understand that. That is something you hear all the time on here. The fact is that a lot of people who are completely positive where they hit the deer, find out later on that they weren't even close. There's a lot of stuff going on when you release that arrow. Often you get a chance to study the spot where the arrow went, and often you do not. Especially on pass-throughs and deer that are attempting to jump the string, that deer can be turned around and out of there before you can actually see the hit. I wouldn't be too quick to be too judgemental. Just be thankful that he was apparently making a good effort to find it. That isn't always the case. Mirage
Re: What do you guys think? Things look alot different from your tree then on the ground. Are you sure your not upset because you didnt get the deer? Sounds like he is trying to do the right thing by looking for it. And your getting upset because????
