PA opener..........

Shoulda stayed home. mad.gif

I get to the field at 3:15 A.M. to find that a group of 8 guys are already there & setting up on the pond bank where I wanted to be. O.K. So they beat me there fair & square. Turns out, the group contains a fellow that I had been close buddies with for nearly 30 years. I introduced him to the sport of goose hunting and in that same (my honeyhole) field. Talk about low. He couldn't even muster the decency to look me in the eye or speak.

So, anyways..........I set up off to the side hoping for sloppy seconds. It gets daylight and these clowns have 7 or 8 blinds set up in the grass (lawn-height grass) on the pond bank and a wad of decoys jammed in there like sardines. Looked like a garbage dump. First fliers of the morning were the mallards. About 300 of them poured in over 2 hours time. They just weren'y buying all the crap set up on the pond bank and circled endlessly between 70 and 100 yards up before leaving. I think those guys got a total of 2 ducks out of 300. And skybust!!!!!!!!! You'd have thought with all the dekes and fancy equipment these guys would have had brought some skill with them. They were shooting waaaaaay too high.

But the real topper............. The geese started coming in, flock after flock. Small ones at first. Then a line of geese about 1/4 mile wide came in. Musta been 150 or 200 in it. The birds start to work and make a few circles at 75 yards or so high. Two geese set and drop out to land on the pond. They shot at them!!!!!!!!! The other 198 geese (which were working down) made for friendlier skies. I could not believe the stupidity that was unfolding in front of me.

Total tally for the morning........out of about 300 mallards and 400 geese that flew into the valley wishing to land..........the 8 geniuses at the pond got about 6 geese tops and a couple mallards. One of the two buddies that joined me got a goose. If the morning was good for nothing else, we all had a bunch of good laughs from where we were. Can't belive how incredibly dense some folks can be. confused.gif

Re: PA opener..........

Count me in there too - I've been totally flabergasted this season (don't know why I've not appreciated it during prior seasons but...) at guys I've seen shooting at ducks at least by my eyes are 70+ yards out.... I only hunt public land and see this stuff all the time - I'll go set up in puddles and settle for taking 1 or 2 ducks that I can call in and decoy to avoid the crowd that opens up antiaircraft fire at birds that have no interest in what they're showing...

Re: PA opener..........

i cant stand people that just go out and buy all the expensive crap and rigs just to try to make people think theyre good....then they pick up a goose call, sound like a dying camel, and skybust the **** out of everything that comes by because no goose in its right mind would decoy to them

maryland is full of jerkoffs like that

we like to call them BALTIMORONS

90% are big buisnessmen that try to impress clients and anyone who can see their nice shiny devoys

Re: PA opener..........

sorry to hear about such a bad opener, that sucks, but theres always the next day, thats like in my area i hunt the illinois river got some blinds on it and we hunt boat blinds, and throughout the year some of the things we see can make us laugh and some things can really piss us off, skybusters are the ones that i can not stand, they can ruin a hunt for everyone, and in my area cause we have the illinois river we got a few of fancy city boys that come down from the city and suburb areas and hunt areas around us, well these guys will make you laugh at the boat landing when you see what they have and they talk like they know what there doing, and then when they hit the water they just piss you off, these rich city boys that come down will have all the fancy stuff that you can imagine, and one of the most important things you need to kill birds, "a call" and they sound like crap when you here them calling, they just flare the birds and thats funny watching that, opening day here this year we had city boys hunting accross from us and they were sky busting, sounded like crap on calls, and they couldnt pull birds down, the birds we did see would be right in the area on the other side of the river and we would pull them across the river to our spread, but luckily these city boys just hunt the first 2 weeks of the season and then they pretty much give up, cause them pretty boys cant take the cold in november and december

Re: PA opener..........

sorry to hear that - i know public land is tough, especially when you find a good spot - people being people, if somebody sees you do well, they want your spot. doesn't even matter if they don't have decoys, calls or even camo, they think they'll sit where you were and do just as good.
