Re: well dumb question

A 22 cal. is too small for deer. I'm not saying it won't kill a deer, but I am saying that the longer you hunt with it, the more deer you will not kill, but only wound. That makes it an unethical choice of weapons, and possibly illegal too. Check your hunting regs.

It is a small critters and varmint rifle, not a big game rifle.

Re: well dumb question

I would not reccomend anything under .243. You could kill a deer with a slingshot, but why torture more animals than you have too. In manitoba we have to use at last a bullet .23 in dia. Not much larger but guns in this range tend to have a heavier bullet and thus deeper penetration, which is what will kill the deer, instead of just wounding it.

Is that the gun you used on that deer?? God, I hope not. Just because you think it's legal, doesn't make it right.

BTW, If you used a .22 in Michigan, you would be arrested!

There is a reason you can't use them for deer in, if not every, then nearly all the states.

Re: well dumb question

James, if that is the only gun you have to use, then you shouldn't be hunting big game with it...period

If all I had was a pellet gun, would it be OK for me to go after a moose? crazy.gif

You asked the question James, and we are trying to answer it for you. Instead of listening you are making excuses for the only rifle you have to hunt with. The scope was off, it's the only gun I have ...What about responsibility, law and ethics James?

well that sucks you all makeing me sound like im a bad person because that my only gun that i can use good greif

It's not that you are a bad person........ it's just that Missouri has bad law that needs to be changed. I looked it up, and you are right...... it is legal for some reason. You could even use a .17!

Please put the .22 away and use a bow during rifle season. You will be doing the deer a big favor by not needlessly wounding them.

Re: well dumb question

The 22 hornet is a varmint round, not appropriate for deer hunting, even though used by some. HuntCast is right, Missouri has a bad law that needs to be changed. They let the 22 hornet slip through the cracks all because it is not a rim-fire cartridge like a regular 22

http://www.fishandhunttexas.com/22_hornet.htm

Calibre usage

.22 rim-fire: small pests such as rats, rabbits and grey squirrels.

.22 Hornet, .220, .222, .22/250, .223: pest species including foxes.

Re: well dumb question

Since the Missouri hunting regs have got you covered as far as the center-shot cartridge goes, I guess it's up to you to decide on which caliber you think is ethical and responsible to kill a deer in a quick and humane fashion.

Even that gut-shot deer would have laid down for you to finish it off, if you were using a bigger caliber. Think about it. wink.gif
