Re: well dumb question

Sorry to cause a ruckus. I bow hunt and have no problem with it. I just really question why people say it is wrong to use 22 cal on deer. If a 243 is good why not a 223. The US military uses the 223 so why not use it on deer. I think penetration is the key factor in what rifle calliber to use. With a good bullet the 22 hornet would easily make it into the vitals I am not going to debate "hydrostatic shock" or this and that. nhbowhunter why is the 243 not sufficent?

Re: well dumb question

22-250 and a heavy 223 can kill deer just as well as a 243 IMHO.

22 hornet is a tad light but within certain range and under good ethics can be used to kill deer.

I agree you should not use it as a primary deer hunting rifle.

VT does not state a minimum caliber either as far as I could see and I considered using my 223 but stuck with the 300 Win Mag instead.

Just cause you can does not mean you should.

Re: well dumb question

I don't know why you asked the question. If it is legal so be it. Would I hunt deer with a .22 Hornet? NO!

If that is the only gun you have, then why ask the question if you have shot so many deer with it? Would you not hunt tomorrow if we all told you the round was too light?

You are right. " Dumb Question " grin.gif

Yes, the purpose for the .223 in the military use was initially intended for the enemy to be wounded, not killed, requiring two men to carry off the one wounded from combat. Problem with this has been and is that the enemy we have most commonly had in real war has not been like our own and they most often leave their fallen soldiers laying there to die.

Re: well dumb question

wtnhunt, The real reason for the .223 to the military was lighter firearms and lighter ammo. The .223 ammo is much lighter to carry per number of rounds than the .308 we used in the M-14's. The rifles are also lighter so they could boost the ground soldier's efficencey. At small arms combat ranges the .223 has been found to be very effective given proper training and range time. We have the best military in the world. We're not under gunned. Our soldiers are not going to risk peril by taking wounded enemy off the field!

Re: well dumb question

I've read all of the above on what caliber to Deer hunt with. I have a question about a similar gun.

My son got a .410 slug rifle for his b-day last year. and this weekend is the Youth Gun season for Ohio. Is this caliber too low for Deer Hunting???

Not what I said, the intent of wounding the enemy was for them to carry their own off the field, but they dont so that concept was a mistake.

Warfare tactic is by injuring one you temporarily remove 3 from combat. Killing one you remove only one. While I will not argue that the .223 ammo is lighter and the weapon is lighter, the premise for using a caliber to wound rather than kill was in fact a tactic used.

LETMGROW, this is something coming from my stepfather, a vietnam veteran, who is extremely knowledgeable of history of this country and of firearms. He told me this and I have no reason whatsoever to doubt him. Sure the .223 could and will kill, and has killed. Anyone wonder why snipers are NOT using .223's in most cases?

Would check your regs, a .410 even with a slug is not legal here, but in my opinion I think it would be better than a .22 centerfire which is legal here.

Re: well dumb question

.22's most deffiantly can kill deer...but ive seen wat can happen when u dont place a good shot and u wound the deer and it suffers...thats why i along with most everyone i know will not use a .22 for deer hutning...last year when i skinned my deer we found a .22 bullet in the bucks neck coverd over in fat...now u shoot a deer in the neck witha .30-06 or .308 and see if it runs more then 0 feet grin.gif ....either way .22 are not an ethical deer hunting rifle

OK, be honest now...How many deer have you shot and killed with that 22 hornet, and how many deer have you shot at, but never recovered?

Re: well dumb question

You see...for one thing, you haven't been hunting long enough to form an educated opinion on what that little pee-shooter can do, and your already 2/1 on the kill and recovery.

These folks in here are all in here trying very hard, without insulting you, to educate you about the caliber your using on deer. It really is up to you to fix the mistake that your state has made by making that cal. legal for deer. Not because we say so, but because, as time goes on, you will find that we were all right, and there will have been a lot of deer shot, and wounded by you, because you wouldn't listen. It's as simple as that.

In your original post you asked if what you were hearing from everybody about the 22 hornet not being suitable for deer was true or not, but are unwilling to accept the answers. I think you know it's not suitable, but are determined (because it's the only gun you say you have) to use it anyway.

I'm strating to wonder why you asked in the first place. Were you looking for more support?

Re: well dumb question

Yah you can if you like to shoo them in the head or through the ear !!! that or a perfect vitale and wait 3x as long as a bow shot! if you want a light shooting rifle why don't you get a .223 ??? hardly a kick and acurate as a 30-30- or a .308 Asaide from the fact is there really a sate that will let you use a .22 on a Deer ? I hope your at the least using a 22 magnum with hollow points. just my 2 cents no pun intended

Re: well dumb question

as far as bow hunting vs small cal. firearm here is a point of comparison most states have a minimum lb rating on bows and a minimal cutting diameter on broabheads this has a direct impact on KE and damage to organs resulting in clean kill

The same applies to the firearm in order to achieve a clean kill the projectile must be a certain diameter and weight traveling at an apropriate speed to do adequate damage even if the shot placement is not absolutely precise

Re: well dumb question

I'm just going to say that I've seen a big ol buck run well over a 1/4 mile after being hit high in the lungs with a .50 cal hollow point sabot. Now if that would have been a .22, the blood would have clotted and he would be running twice as fast, we wouldn't have found him. The fact that your just beggining your hunting career will probably mean theres going to be more misplaced shots than that of a guy who has been hunting for 20 years. Better to er on the side of caution, take out the ML, a bow, your grandpa's rifle, a slug gun (shotgun), leave the .22 for rabbits.

just my opinion.
