Stinger-Hunter
I mentioned that someone stole my tree stand in another post, but i only told a fraction of the story. I met the guy who stole my tree stand and told him that if my stand was on private property he was hunting (it wasn't marked), just tell me and I'd move it. The guy waited until lunch for us to go to our cars, then he took the stand down and hid it 100 yards away in very thick brush. He did this after i talked to him about it. He also knew that the guy I hunted with was very good friends with the actual property owner. When i talked with the thief, he tried to pass it off as if it was his property. so i said, "oh, that's Richard Swenson's property there, I just met him yesterday and we hunted that a few years ago, he drives a truck for the other guy I'm hunting with" Well, the property owner (R. Swenson) confirmed yesterday that the tree stand was not on his property, it was still on state property. The guy just didn't want anyone close to his stand (100 yards away). i talked to the thief over the phone and he admitted taking it - said he hid it 50 yards away (then told the R.Swenson that he hid it 100 yards away). My hunting buddy and the R. Swenson looked for 2 hours and couldn't find the tree stand. R. Swenson is making the thief go out there and find the stand and give it to him to that he can return it properly. So meanwhile, my buddy calls the police to request that they go to the thief's house and ask him to retrieve the stand and they gave my buddy the run around. Then finally one of them said it was community property since it now was there overnight. Can you believe that? it was only there overnight cause the guy took the tree stand!! What gets me is that I told the thief face-to-face that I would move the stand if indeed it was on private property and he still took it anyway. I mean, we talked to this guy and his kids for about 20 minutes during the afternoon the day before. Unbelievable! I don't know if this guy has guts or is just plain stupid. All he had to do was leave a note on the thing. I'm convinced that if no one is around and a person doesn't think they will get caught, they will commit a crime if it helps them to some end. P.S. This is the second $200+ climber I've had stolen in 2 years.

Can you believe that? [/ QUOTE ] Man, that's nuts. Does that mean if your car breaks down on a public road, and you leave it over night, that it becomes public property and anyone can just come and claim it, as their own ?? VTbowman
Re: Tree stand stolen, Cops don\'t care That really bites. Even knowing who did it and still not getting results form the police.. On another note I had a guy who hung a stand on my property. I left a note telling him to remove the stand and that he did not have premission to hunt the property. I even left my number to call me in case it was someone I knew or whatever. I go back the next weekend, stand still there, boot prints, and a ripped up note a few yards away. I took the stand and left another note with my address saying if he wanted it back to come claim it. Never heard from him. I still have the stand 5 years later and hung it a few years ago to hunt from. I bet he thinks he's got a new climber out of all this... GGggrrrrr....!!!! woodsman2230
Re: Tree stand stolen, Cops don\'t care That is BS....that guy had no right touching your stand and also I would go to that guys place and make him go with you to get your stand. What I do if someone is hunting near my stand I would write a note but I would never touch his stand much less move it. I had a guy hang a stand 50 feet from me one year and when he got into it the first day of the season I walked over and made him move it right then and there. BUT I WOULD NEVER TOUCH HIS STAND!! wtnhunt
Re: Tree stand stolen, Cops don\'t care That really is a shame. Just dont understand why low lifes have to do that kind of crap. They are no different than the poachers that give us all a bad rap in my honest opinion.
TKLambert
Re: Tree stand stolen, Cops don\'t care Its a shame that 10 years ago u could things unlocked and not worry about it being stolen, now everything has to be locked or otherwise its gone. I always take a cable and a lock that will make it through both parts of the climber and around the tree.

Stinger-Hunter
Re: Tree stand stolen, Cops don\'t care Update on my situation: My buddy (Army recruiter) went to the Sheriff's office in uniform and told the officer what happened and that the thief admitted taking it to 3 people. The Sheriff called the thief and told him that he has until tomorrow night to return it or he'll be there with bracelets for him. I'll be waiting anxiously to here if he does.
