WABS
Headed to MT next year for a Elk/Deer hunt and need to purchase a rifle for the trip. Largest center fire I own is a .243, so I'm in the market for a 300 WSM. Be interested in getting some insight and lessons learned from those of you out there that have purchased a 300 WSM
Strut_Buster
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM I have a Model 70 Super shadow in 300 WSM. Its a great shooting gun and lightweight. I won this gun 2 years ago and have had no problems. The recoil is the same or less as the Regular Win Mag and preformance is equal or better. If you Hand Load this gun can be super hot but factory ammo is good stuff anyways. For deer I use a 165 gr. and for my elk hunt someday I'll use my 180 gr. My question for you is can you handle this gun. If your largest weapon is a 243 I would get someones 30/06 and shoot it first. If you can handle this you can handle a 300 WSM. If your a person who absolutley can't handle recoil. Or averts from physics. Just buy a 30/06. But If you want a hot cartrige thats lightweight and an awesome platform for any ungulate in north america. Here's your cartrige.

WABS
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM Thanks for the info. Recoil is no problem. I only have a .243 because I've never had cause to own anything bigger. I have fired 30.06 and 7mm Mag rifles in the past (borrowed from friends). I've done mostly blackpowder hunting over the course of the last 15 years or so (both .50 and .54 cal). I'm also a relatively large 6'3" 240 pounds -- no recoil I don't believe will be a problem. I'm torn between Winchester and Browning.
tped
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM I would think that the 300WSM would be a good caliber choice for such a hunt. I did a similar hunt a few years back and used my 7mm mag with 160 grain nosler partitions and it workded great on the elk and mule deer. I saw in a magazine today that Remington is gong to chamber the 270WSM and 300WSM in the 700 which certainly got my attention as I feel the Remington 700 is one of the best production rifles out of the box. Shaun_300
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM hey, i just bought a Browning BLR in a .300 WSM last sunday and I LOVE IT lol. i used to use a Remington 700 .300 Win. Mag and i loved that gun, but it was a pain without a detatchable clip and carrying the 3 foot shells so i loved dad's BLR in a .308 and i went with the 300 WSM because i like the magnum calibers. i think this is the perfect caliber because it is a short shell and the recoil is very minimal, i find that my WSM has a smaller recoil than dad's 308 and my brother's .270 in the BLR. it is a short shell, .308 in length and the width of the cartridge is based on the .416 Rem Mag. but when i compare widths with my .300 Win Mag, it is not that much bigger. good luck with your purchase, i would reccomend the Browning BLR any day. AJ
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM [ QUOTE ] ...the width of the cartridge is based on the .416 Rem Mag. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Shaun, not even close. The .416 Rem is a belted magnum. The Win's WSM, Rem's SAUM and RUM are based off the old .404 Jeffries case, with some modifications in rim diameter, head diameter, shoulder angle, and length. WABS
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM So AJ what's your opinion on rifle and scope setup? I'm heading out with checkbook in hand this weekend. Are you shooting in IWLA Winter League? Starts Jan
AJ
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM [ QUOTE ] So AJ what's your opinion on rifle and scope setup? I'm heading out with checkbook in hand this weekend. [/ QUOTE ] Thats easy, a Kimber 8400 Montana topped with a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 scope. That should be one sweeeeet setup. I guess for a more economical setup, the Win 70 Super Shadow topped with one of these: Nikon Monarch 3.3-10x44 Pentax Whitetail Unlimited 3.7-11x42 Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 Weaver Grand Slam 3.5-10x50 [ QUOTE ] Are you shooting in IWLA Winter League? Starts Jan 9 [/ QUOTE ] Nope, I am not even sure if I will get to our annual pheasant hunt after deer season. I have a lot of work to do cleaning out my parents house. Shaun_300
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM OOPS ... sorry about that guys, i meant that, i .416 keeps jumpin outa my mouth and i have NO clue why. whenever i bought my gun, the salesman told me .416 first, then i questioned, and he said "oops. i meant the .404 Jeffries." so thats probably why. tped
Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM trex3397 -- It was in the December issue of Buckmasters in the modern rifle section.(pg 44) The article mentioned the Remingtons and them discontinuing their ADL line and coming out with a new XCR rifle which is extreme conditon rifle with special coating on the metal and special stock. It also covered Weatherby and them coming out with a Vanguard SUB_MOA which wil be guaranteed to shoot a 3 shot group under .99 inch. Supposedly they will handpick the best of the Vanguards that test at .75 inch to meet the guarantee. I checked the Remington site but they do not have any of this info on there yet.
