Re: Any Success in NY Today?

Probably one of the best openers that I have had in years, and didn't even take one deer. On the other hand, I did get to see quite a few and one was a dandy buck. On the other hand, the state land that I hunt was absolutely dead in terms of shots. That really doesn't bother me too much because even though I saw 6 deer today, the herd is still way to low for this particular patch of state land. I didn't even attempt a shot at the does. I had already made up my mind that I was not going to complain about the deer shortage and then keep on filling every antlerless tag that I could. The buck was simply screened too much for the distance of the shot so I passed on him....but I did have the gun up and I was really wrestling with the temptation.

It still was a great day of hunting. Understand that I am speaking from a dreary bow season where I spent far too many days afield (all but three) without seeing any deer and a previous three year batch of bow and gun seasons which were pretty boring with nothing to look at but chipmunks and squirrels. So the fact that I got to SEE a few deer today was a definite thing to enjoy and celebrate.

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

Well we had a great day here sat. morning. I see 8 doe and 3 young bucks all 4 points or less. But the deer were moving well, not spooked, very little shooting going on.

My father saw 6 doe and 2 young bucks and my younger brother took a nice 4 point at 7:30.

Great day in the field, no rain, not too cold and not too warm.

We will get them tomorrow.

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

Sat until 10am had to go in and find out why my furnace decided not work. Passed on a young 8pt and then almost had to do the heimlich on a button buck choking on corn cobb. Saw 0 in the afternoon .

My wife on the other hand missed a nice buck in the morning. I told her now your a deer hunter! Her 1st buck was a gimmee , now she has the fever good. She sat all day in the stand and never complained .

good luck to everyone

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

Didn't get to pull the trigger this weekend...but still had my best opener in years here in 8P & 8R. Saw 6 bucks and a bunch of does yest...passed on a couple of small bucks and a couple of big does (no DMP's for this unit). We were in the back of the truck setting up a drive about 10:00 yest. and there was an absolute MONSTER standing out in the neighbors field tending a doe. Don't know how many points he had but he was a huge bodied deer with a really tall and wide rack...without a doubt the biggest buck that I've ever seen during open season. The funny thing is, they apparently were bedding in a small swampy patch of brush/goldenrod within 100 yds. of a cabin with 4-wheelers driving all around them! The image of him turning around and watching that huge white rack disappear into the goldenrod is still etched into my mind crazy.gif. Saw a couple more nice bucks but couldn't get a clean shot on either. Had a nice buck grunting and chasing does out in front of me during a drive this morning. The 4 does came within a few yards of me and spooked causing the buck to stop behind some brush where I couldn't shoot. I've heard of a few big bucks getting taken in the area, including a real nice 10-pt. up the road and a 24" monster on the winery property that I hunt. Still lots of bucks out there for the taking. I've got until Sat. off so I plan on doing some serious hunting this week.

I had success both today and Yesterday. Yesterday, I shot 7 or 8 times and got some good photos of a doe fawn. The camera did all the shooting. LMBO

Today I saw a great buck but had no oppertunity to shoot. He didn't beat out the local hardware store, referring to head hardware, but he was a shooter for sure.

Then I saw that same doe fawn again as well as a nice little button buck. I heard the button buck coming from his cute little grunting that he was doing. At first I couldn't figure out where he was. Then I caught him out of hte corner of my eye. Coming from behind he was and he was coming fast.

I may go out again on Wednesday. Maybe by then the woods will have calmed down a bit.

Success in my eyes is enjoying the day and the wonderful nature that we have been provided to hear and watch.

Glad to hear the stories of a great opener!

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

I saw absolutely nothing here except for our neighbors who are jerks and even bigger jerks when it comes to deer season. I did see a couple does this evening when we went to the neighbor's land but I was looking for a buck, my DMP isn't for that area. The neighbors like to get a big group together, surround a field, and empty their guns on running deer. they push the land we hunt so hard the first couple days that after that, it makes hunting extremely tough. Gotta keep going though....Andy got a nice doe Saturday morning though.

My cousin got a nice 10 point down your way on saturday. My uncle owns land in Steuben county. I doubt it was the one that youa re talking about though. It scored 115", he was aged at 3 1/2". My uncle and cousin said there was not much shooting down there on opening day, I was not able to go but really enjoy it down there, a lot of nice bucks grin.gif

QDMA,

Just outta curiousity...any idea of the name of the town where they were hunting?

Here's a couple of pics. of a 4.5 yr. old 12 pt. (141 gross) that my uncle killed with his bow on Nov. 10. He found the right side shed off of this deer from the previous year while hunting on Sat.! cool.gif

I sure wish more of our bucks around here could make it to this age class.

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

They hunt on the top of mount washington, just outside of bath, what a sweet buck. I have seen some real beauties come out of that area and have seen some bucks in the wild that I could not get good shots on and had to let walk. That area of NY has a lot of deer in the NY state reacord books. Always makes you appreciate what might be walking in the woods when you go out down there.

What area are you from, I don't know that area very well, where is 8P and 8R?

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

I'm pretty familiar with the Bath area as I only live 12 miiles or so north of there. A couple of my uncle's own 130 acres on the Hammonsport end of Mt. Washington. They're overrun with does and see some pretty nice bucks too. I spent most of my bowseason hunting winery property in Hammondsport which is WMU 8P on the western side of Keuka Lake....lots of bucks running around there this year. Unit 8R borders 8P to the north and is where I see most of the big boys...alot more farming going on up that way.

I'll PM ya a few pics. of some local bucks that have been taken around the house over the past few seasons.

Are you gonna make it back over this way before the end of season?

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

The past couple of days have been pretty slow. I've seen deer every time out but nothing to really get a shot at. However, the deer are still around...lots of rubs, scrapes and fresh tracks. I believe that the main problem is the amount of posted property in the area where the deer are able to hold up and no one can get to them to get them up and moving during shooting hours.

Honestly though, this is the best year for big bucks being taken around here since '02. My dad's friend killed this 23" 11-pt. above the house Monday evening.

Another group of guys got a monster 21" 11-pt. on a drive only a couple hundred yards from this one the day before. There was a 152" 10-pt. with a 24" spread killed on some local winery property that I hunt on opening day. My neighbors buddy killed a 164" 10-pt. in the next town over. I've heard of quite a few other big 8's and 10's being taken too.

The monster that I saw on opening day is still at large...hopefully, someone in my family will get a crack at him.

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

Nice Buck...congrats!

The opener was REAL slow for us in 3H. It was the 1st year of antler restrictions (3 on a side to be legal). Doe tags were only given out to preference point holders of 3 or more for gun season. With AR's and no doe tags, the pickin's were mighty slim. There is a load of yotes, only one went down and ALOT of bear sign, scat and tree scratches.

But we saw a sign that said bear left, so we went home tongue.gifgrin.gif

2 of our party decided to get primitive, they entered our land from the swamp, via canoe. Got in very quiet. A buck snort wheezed so close to my buddy that he almost dropped his gun in the swamp. He never heard one soo close before and soo loud.

No shots, but plenty of laughs! grin.gif

We are going up again to 3H tomorrow for the weekend. Good Luck to all!

Re: Any Success in NY Today?

My week at camp was none too shabby. One guy I hunt with got a decent little 8 point mid morning Saturday after my other buddy missed it twice. I hunted Saturday to Wednesday and saw deer every day, one buck running with a doe and no shot. Tracked them for a ways but lost them at the end of a logging road. A local farmer told us about one that dressed at 240 which is a HUGE deer for the Catskills. He also said there was a big 10 or 12 running the DEP land where we were hunting which explains the fresh rubs I found Tuesday. I think my seasons over though, no more time with school and work. This real life stuff sucks.
