doughboy1956
This is what Matt Hughes said Friday that caused me to lose all respect i had for him and hoped he got the wooping he ending up getting!!! Neil Davidson, Canadian Press Published: Friday, November 17, 2006 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CP) - UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes took a swipe north of the border Thursday, moving out of his mixed martial arts comfort zone to criticize Canadians' hearts. The fighting farmer from Hillsboro, Ill., who is preparing for a title defence Saturday night against Montreal's Georges St. Pierre at Arco Arena in the main event of UFC 65: Bad Intentions, was asked at a news conference Thursday about some of his past comments about Canada. Hughes was asked by a Canadian reporter Thursday if such comments were mere pre-fight hype and whether he wanted to clarify his attitude towards those north of the border. "Well, if you look back at history, I don't think Canada's had big wars or anything like that. They're not a violent country, can we say that? Would you agree?" the 170-pound champion asked the reporter. Hughes said "Who wants to lose to a Canadian in a street fight?" Told Canada had done its bit, Hughes responded: "You've done your bit. Well I'm from America and I think we're fighters, as a country. Look where we're at, we're all over. That's what I was talking about." So Canadians aren't fighters, Hughes was then asked. "I don't see you guys venturing out trying to help the world out, we'll say that," he responded. They don't have a real warrior spirit. They don't have any heart. So the fight is going to be easy. Georges is going to give up because of that." UFC president Dana White chimed in: "Put that in the headline, Matt Hughes hates Canadians. Pay-per-view Saturday night," said White. "If Matt thinks there is no warrior in Canada, he's going to be in a war Saturday night, I can tell you that right now." Meet the new Boss!!! SACRAMENTO, November 18 – Georges St. Pierre has never been shy in proclaiming Matt Hughes as his mixed martial arts idol, even citing it as a reason for his 2004 loss to the longtime champion. But tonight before a packed house at Arco Arena, St. Pierre showed no respect to his hero in their rematch, scoring a one-sided second round TKO to win the UFC Welterweight Championship. “I don’t know what to say,” said Hughes. “I really didn’t expect it to go down like that.” Neither did most MMA observers, who figured the bout would be one of the most competitive of 2006. In the end though, it was St. Pierre who ran through Hughes with extreme prejudice. St. Pierre (13-1) pushed the pace early behind leg kicks and the occasional punch as Hughes (42-5) took his time looking for an opening. At the one minute mark of the round, it was St. Pierre picking the action up even more emphatically as he put Hughes on his heels with his impressive standup, which nonetheless brought a smile from the champion. Two low kicks from St. Pierre halted his momentum though as Hughes was forced to take a short break to recover. The Canadian kept his focus upon the restart and went right back to working his faster hands and feet on Hughes and tossing off the Illinois native’s first half-hearted takedown attempt. With under 1:20 to go, St. Pierre opted to take the fight to the canvas and landed some strikes before standing and scoring with a knee. Hughes looked to get back into the scoring column by committing to a takedown, but St. Pierre brushed him off and finished with a right hand that dropped the champion just before the bell intervened. Hughes began the second round with a smirk, but this was no laughing matter, as St. Pierre was not only winning the standup game, he was showing the physical strength to keep the champion at bay. With 3:45 left, St. Pierre hit paydirt, landing a high left kick that put Hughes on the mat again, this time, the bell wouldn’t save the longtime champion, and with referee John McCarthy’s stoppage at 1:25 of the second, a new king was crowned. Guest antlers21
Re: Matt Hughes lost his UFC title and my respect!!! I think they like to hype it up a lot kinda like WWE wrestling. All the fighters have respect for one another, its mostly all a show boys so dont read into it too much. I like GSP and good for him! But I dont listen to all the pre fight hype because its that way no matter who they fight every month. Kind of like polititians near election time. MUDRUNNER
Re: Matt Hughes lost his UFC title and my respect!!! Your right Antlers21.They love all the hype and media attention. When I first started watching the hype about Shamrock and Ortiz I figured it was probably a bunch of bull. After the last fight in Spike they hugged and raised each others arms like they were best buds.If you hate someone that bad you're not gonna be doing that sort of thing after a fight like that.IMO the interviews are jazzed up to get attention so more people buy the fights. I love the fights, but could do without all the extra made up stuff.
