Differences...WSM to WM

Re: Differences...WSM to WM

The biggest difference is the action length needed to feed them. The short mag can use a short or 308 Win length action. The 300 Win Mag needs at least a standard length action to feed. The Win Mag pulls ahead with heavier bullets. Other than that, they are equal.

Yep, as usual, AJ hit it on the head. grin.gif

I've got both a .300 Win Mag and a .300 WSM. I prefer the WSM for the length of the shells and the shorter action. The WSM's cartridge looks basically like an oversized .308 cartridge with the same length. It sure is nice carrying the shorter shells around opposed to the big win mag's. I also find the recoil of my short mag a little easier on the shoulder than my win mag, even though the short mag is a lighter gun.

When comparing ammo prices, there isn't that much of a difference between the two. The best price on ammo for the WSM I have found up here is $28.99/box for Remington Core-lokt 150gr, the same round in the .300 Win mag may be $2-3 cheaper if any.

With the shorter action comes a quicker throw of the bolt for follow-ups shots. Probably not a big deal for most people but I really noticed it. Speed is directly proportionate to muscle memory as far as shooting is concerned. I really notice when weapons of any sort tend to operate faster than others.
