SAVAGE VS. MARLIN

Need some advice or opinions. I am going to buy

a .17 hmr in a week or so. I know I want a bolt action. The Marlin is priced at $190, has synthetic stock and stainless barrel. The Savage sells for $210,

have a nice wood stock and also the accu-trigger. I want a winter project to redo a stock, like taking it down to bare wood, seal it, stain it, then using some

tung oil, ( or something similiar ) and rub 10-20 coats of it. What does everyone think and also your ideas on the 2 different brands.

Re: SAVAGE VS. MARLIN

The Savage 17's that I have shot were very good shooters. I tried a Marlin as well and it was pretty darned nice. It's really a personal thing mind you, but I believe that I would opt for the Savage with the far superior trigger and (at least in my opinion) the consistently accurate barrels.

Re: SAVAGE VS. MARLIN

well, if one has a synthetic stock and the other has a wood stock, it's kind of a no-brainer in you're looking for something to refinish a stock on...

both brands have had great reputations for years, i don't think you would be disappointed with the quality of either. but, if you're looking for a wood stock to play around with, you won't be happy with a synthetic stock
