mathews4life
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? There is no such thing as a dumb question man..lol..i bet someone else in the forum has the same question. Personally i have a lil gerber hand saw that i carry w/ me at all times. I find the best tree as possible, but if it has branches i just saw em out the way on the way up the tree. I try my best to set up my stands weeks ahead of time that way i dont have to make to much noise the day i go to hunt. I dont think it bothers the deer to much. I have cut branches in the morning before daylight and still saw deer. You just never know. Personally i'd suggest a lock on that way you dont have to cut the branches and you can use them as cover.. thats just my 2 cents...good luck to you
buckee
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? It is best, if you have a climber to scout out an area before the season opens for good stand placement sites, climb all those trees, and de-limb them. Then when hunting season comes, you have it easy..just sneak in there and climb which ever tree you like, depending on wind etc. Picking a tree that is nice and straight up to the height you want is the key. what-ever branches are encountered on your first climb, can be cut and cleared from the bottom of the tree when you come down. There is a lot more to tree-stand hunting than meets the eye. You will also need to clear yourself some shooting lanes in all your stand locations so you don't miss out at that golden opportunity when it comes along. Preparing the trees before hunting season is the key, and if you've done your home-work right, you'll be able to hunt those same locations, year after year. horst
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? Thats one reason I dont have a climber, we dont many trees that the branches dont go clear to the ground on and it illegal to cut them on public ground where I do a lot of my hunting

billygoat
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? Buckee nailed it.... get out early and scout for "good" trees. In South Central WI we have many Birch and popal (sp) trees, which are great for using a climber on... we also have many oaks, which, depending on forest cover, can be a great tree for a climber. I too carry a gerber saw w/ both a tree blade and a bone blade (awesome set for under $35.00). Locate several trees prior to the start of your season, ascend them (clearing limbs on the way up), make sure once you are at the height you think you will hunt, to mark your tree (visibly), so when you descend, you can clear appropriate shooting lanes. Climbers are not right for everyone or overyplace... When I hunt southern IA, I find it very difficult to use my climbers (on my particular farm) due to the lack of straight, "clean" trees... Hope that helps a little.
buckee
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? And just a tip for all you young hunters out there. Find ideal deer trails first and then look for a downwind tree from that trail or trails to set-up in. Keep the prevailing wind in mind and maybe have a few locations for those alternate wind days. Being within good shooting range and having good shooting lanes is a must. I like to find a spot where 2 or more game trails intersect or cross. It just ups your odds of seeing game. The location of game is your #1 priority, the right tree to set up in is the #2 priority. There is no sense setting tree-stands up in an area that has very little or no deer movement. Guest 2500HD
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? That is one down side to climber is finding a good tree to get in the exact spot you wish to hunt. I keep a saw attached to my Ol' Man at all times just in case and i usually have to do some trimmimg the first time in every tree.

You just might get someone PO'ed big time at ya... I'm sure if I went up to VTbowmans property and started cutting up his tree's I'd be on that days menue...LOL Climbers are great if used repectfully..Good hunting and no questions is a dumb question.. Switchback29A1
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? There all right, find good deer spots then pick a tree, usually it's not to hard to find a good tree right around that spot, but yes take a saw and cut some branches, now don't go cutting a tree thats got a bigillion branches, but 3 or 4 not to thick branches you should be ok to cut them before your hunt. Tominator
Re: OK HERES A DUMB????? i don't climb those kind unless it's a small branch of 1" or less in diameter and move on to another tree. some areas are just devoid of climbable trees. it's probably the biggest drawback of a climber.
