which would you have done?

i'll make it short since no one really wants to read long posts.

Opening day of rifle in wv, i was hunting in tyler county on a property with only 3 ppl covering over 100 acres.

as you drive down the road it is hollow after hollow. i was in the 1st of the property and my friend was the next one on the right.

The hollow to the left was another persons property with an older woman hunting from a ground blind about 300 yards away from me (she knows the land owner of the property i was hunting very well)

1st time i ever hunted it and got permission. 730 comes around and i hear her shoot. i hear deer moving my way and i saw a nice 8 point shooter.

I scope the deer quicker then discover it limping. Broken shoulder but still movin my way. It stops, stumbles and i realize it was the deer she shot at.

I see it fall, and get back up again and continue my way. I decided not to shoot and take the deer she shot becasue i did not want to really steal someones deer. I got done, helped her track it and drag it to her quad.

i could have easily taken the buck and been done.

The good: she was obviously very thankful and hopefully will tell the owner that i did that for her so i can get permission for the future hopefully. And i got permission to hunt her blind since her tag was filled.

The Bad: the day was a waste from that point on, and no buck. and after 3 days no other shooters. (would have been my biggest buck to date)

ive been hearing i should have shot, others sayin i did the right thing.

Would you have shot since the deer was still alive and moving? i almost did becasue i did not want another hunter shooting her deer also.

So would you have shot? why or why not?

discuss..

Re: which would you have done?

I think you did the right thing knowing that the deer was hit and there was a good chance of recovery. Now if your hunting in the middle of nowhere and you haven't heard a shot, and you see that same buck walk by limping, I think you should shoot.

Hope this helps ease the sting. Good luck for the rest of the year.

I would have finished him off then let her know where her deer was and help drag it out if needed

then would it have been hers or mine? since i would have put the shot on the deer that killed it?

Re: which would you have done?

You obviously could tell the deer wasn't going to stay on it's feet much longer, so you did the right thing.

and even if you had of finished it off, and then still let her have it, it would have also been the right thing.

If you had of shot it, knowing she had fatally wounded it (like you did) and tried to claim it as your own, that my friend would have made you a schmuck wink.gif

You did the right thing. grin.gif

I would have done the same thing. You seen the deer stumble and fall.So you could probly tell if the shot she made was fatal by the bucks actions.Good ethics is everything when hunting private land.

you did the right thing...i'm with will and steve on this.... i have finished off deer for others before...i don't want to claim a deer that someone else shot...and i once shot a 8 point that ran by a young hunter...i was shooting a 243 and he a 20 guage...he pulled up and shot and the deer fell in front of him but never hit the deer ...but he thought he did and i couldn't spoil his enjoyment....hids dad later called me and offered to buy my next years deer tag for letting his son take the deer and getting him into hunting even more ...i told him no thanks i got a bigger kick out of the childs reaction than taking the buck....

It's her deer since she shot it first with what would have been a fatal shot.

I still would have finished it off because I've seen wounded deer get up and run off leaving you with what could be a tough tracking job.

My son learned a lesson on this last year he had shot a nice buck with his muzzleloader that ran off. While we were tracking it we jumped it in a thicket and I had a 20 yard shot and was going to drop it.My son said no let me shoot it and stepped around a tree for a clear shot but the buck bolted off. After hours of tracking this deer over ridges and up a steep hill we never found it.So I told him no matter who shot it if you get a chance knock it down, now he knows.

TomsD5,

That was an awesome thing you done for that boy.

I think you will be rewarded some day for that decision. smile.gif

Re: which would you have done?

I would have done what my Father taught me to do years ago...

Put the Deer on the Ground.

If I'm going to pass on a healthy deer..no problem...it's just a choice. Dad always told me never to let a deer thats been hit already get by me if I had a tag to legally shoot it.

I would have let her tag it but I know I would not have taken the chance to let the deer get away...and possibly not be found.

What you did could have some great benefits for you with the landowner...but doing the right thing is always a good reward in and of itself wink.gif

I WOULD HAVE SHOT, AND PUT IT DOWN FOR HER. HOWEVER I WOULD LET HER TAG IT. I'VE DONE THIS IN THE PAST. SOMEONE SHOT A DOE, SHE CAME BY ME LIMPING AND WALKING ON THREE LEGS. I SHOT THE DOE AND NOT LONG AFTER THAT THE SHOOTER CAME BY AND I SHOWWED HIM WHERE HIS DEER WAS. smile.gifsmile.gif
