bulldawg
I feel pretty stupid now. I let my guard down yesterday when a group of us went out for an afternoon deer drive. Something that I always do while looking for blood after someone shoots at some deer, is to keep on high alert. Well, the son took a long shot at 3 does, and I halfheartedly went over to check the area for blood. There was about 150 yards of semi tall swamp grass that they ran into. I was about 100 yards through the patch, and for some weird reason(guess the drive had worn me out), I slung my shotgun over my shoulder as I was walking along. Then, without any warning, a monster of a buck stood up about 35 yards in front of me, and I had to fumble around to get the gun in my hands before I could take the shot. by the time I got the gun up, he was strongly angling away, and running fast. He finally turned so I could get a shot, but I missed him. Others in the group tried after that, but everyone was out of range by the time he got by them. Followed the trail for a long ways, and he was unscathed. The spread on the antlers was at least 21" inside, and he had great mass and tine length. Worst part is, my cousin owes me a head mount, as his freezer went out and ruined my pig cape. Oh well, maybe next time!
wtnhunt
Re: Foiled by a bruiser buck Too bad, but part of hunting I guess. Have had experiences with a few nice ones I could never even get shots on over the years.
buckee
Re: Foiled by a bruiser buck OUCH Tom ... Isn't that always the way. You can be on guard all day and you drop your guard for a couple of minutes and that's when it all happens. Sorry about your pig cape too..that bites big-time.
