Jeramie Posted November 27, 2006 Report Share Posted November 27, 2006 I had my mom come over to the house this past Wednesday to watch the baby so I could go hunting. Mom has bad knees so I planned on penning up the horses and leaving the front gate open for Mom. Its a pain for me to open the gate, I can imagine what its like for someone who has had knee surgeries and still cant walk well. Anyway, I fill the feed buckets and start into the "Catch Pen." Typically I wont call until Ive set the buckets down otherwise they run all over you. It was still pitch black and apparently they were closer then I thought. I made it through the pen gate when my 1-year old Filly runs ahead of me. My 5-year old gelding close in tow. She kicked at him.... and missed. Oh, she didn't miss completely, she found me OK. None of my horses are kickers. I purposely work with them (braiding, etc) but apparently the feed was important enough to ward off the Gelding. She caught me in the hip and her hoof continued on to my glute. If I had to guess she is about 500-600lbs right now so she really connected. My wife was up getting ready for work. I stumbled in with my pants around my knees.... Blood flowing. It never broke the skin. She hit me hard enough that blood started to seep out the pores. Now, several days later I still have a bruise the dia of a horse hoof and about twice as long. Its sore but it could have been MUCH worse. A couple inches over and I could have had a broken and or dislocated hip..... Man they can kick lightning fast... Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hope it's not more serious than a bruise. A buddy of mines horse kicked another horse in the side of the head and killed it instantly. The kicker was a pretty docile horse too. Actually I had some 800MG Ibuprofen left over from another accident and it knocked the edge off for a few days. I noticed this morning that the bruise has actually lightened a lot! My sister was riding her filly a couple years ago, and I can't remember why but she reared up so my sister slid out of the saddle and off herb ack. When the filly came down, she kicked and hit my sister upper groin, inside of hip bone and gave her a good gash that needed a few stitches. Dr. said it missed the femoral artery by an inch...
