MCH
Re: Texas Heart Shot? [ QUOTE ] What is a "Texas" heart shot? [/ QUOTE ] If I'm not mistaken, it's shooting a deer facing directly away from you. Bullet travels through the rear end and supposedly hits the "heart" on its way out. Guest Doekiller
Re: Texas Heart Shot? I've seen it take 'em down, but you usually have to shoot 'em again, because it usually doesn't quiet reach the heart

VABuckSlayer
Re: Texas Heart Shot? I know a guy who made that shot with a bow. Complete pass through and the deer only went 30 yards. I wouldn't take that shot myself though. Eric

M00N
Re: Texas Heart Shot? Nope wouldn't take the shot, too easy to not make the shot correctly and have a very badly wounded animal. Plus it'd ruin the meat not only with the bullet damage but from the gut spillage and seepage into the meat. I can only think of one situation I'd ever try such a crazy shot and that'd be a badly wounded deer hobbling or walking straight away in a great deal of pain about to pass into somewhere where you can't legally kill it after that. mitrrophybowhunter
Re: Texas Heart Shot? I don't see why you would want to do that. If anything a better shot would be at the base of the neck!
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Texas Heart Shot? Ethical? Depends on the weapon and your skill level. A centerfire rifle will most definitely be deadly with that shot placement. Shotgun, perhaps slightly less so. Bow, no way. I took this shot on a trophy buck several years ago. It was my only opportunity and I was more than confident that at 60 yards I wouldn't have any problems with my shot placement from my scoped 30-06. The hit was "dead center" and the bullet travelled all the way through the deer length wise. Of course it dropped in it's tracks. I found part of the copper jacket lodged under the skin of the brisket, the lead core had exited (so much for "Core-Loc"). There was a small amount of meat loss from the hind quarters, but I'd say the total was no more than 1-2 pounds. And yes, gutting it was an adventure! Bottom line is that it's not my favorite shot, and not one I'd casually take at a deer, but if the situation called for it, I'd feel confident in a quick kill using that shot. johnf
Re: Texas Heart Shot? I've heard the same type story as Texan's first hand from a guy who shot one last year like that. Had no entrance or exit wound. Deer dropped in it's tracks from a 257Roberts.

Guest Yooper
Re: Texas Heart Shot? I'd do it. My uncle was a guide for a friend of his and had a 130 class 8 pt facing away from them and he told his friend to shoot you know where and didn't. Buck heard 'em and took off, no shot. I get to camp same buck comes in chasing does, hard and fast. I didn't even have a chance to stop him so I remembered what happened to my uncle the day before and I aimed and fired. I hit dead center. The buck dropped to his knees and was out in minutes. The bullet came out just left of the center in the front chest. I took a tiny chunk from one of the hind quarters that was it. I was also hunting on the ground so the flat trajectory helped a little I'd say. I'd do it again if I only had a split second to shoot. jgbennett6
Re: Texas Heart Shot? i've done it twice, once ona buck that had been gut shot that we were tracking and the other on a buck that was running away at 30 yards. both shots from my 12 guage hit a butt cheek... shattered the artery and kept on going, it has put them down quickly. not easy to dress but a very quick kill....if you are confident in the shot. JamesVee
Re: Texas Heart Shot? If you are confident, it's for sure a killing shot. I wouldn't hesitate with the right caliber.
