Texas Heart Shot?

Re: Texas Heart Shot?

Nope wouldn't take the shot, too easy to not make the shot correctly and have a very badly wounded animal. Plus it'd ruin the meat not only with the bullet damage but from the gut spillage and seepage into the meat. crazy.gif I can only think of one situation I'd ever try such a crazy shot and that'd be a badly wounded deer hobbling or walking straight away in a great deal of pain about to pass into somewhere where you can't legally kill it after that.

Re: Texas Heart Shot?

Ethical? Depends on the weapon and your skill level. A centerfire rifle will most definitely be deadly with that shot placement. Shotgun, perhaps slightly less so. Bow, no way.

I took this shot on a trophy buck several years ago. It was my only opportunity and I was more than confident that at 60 yards I wouldn't have any problems with my shot placement from my scoped 30-06. The hit was "dead center" and the bullet travelled all the way through the deer length wise. Of course it dropped in it's tracks. I found part of the copper jacket lodged under the skin of the brisket, the lead core had exited (so much for "Core-Loc"). There was a small amount of meat loss from the hind quarters, but I'd say the total was no more than 1-2 pounds. And yes, gutting it was an adventure!

Bottom line is that it's not my favorite shot, and not one I'd casually take at a deer, but if the situation called for it, I'd feel confident in a quick kill using that shot.

Re: Texas Heart Shot?

I'd do it. My uncle was a guide for a friend of his and had a 130 class 8 pt facing away from them and he told his friend to shoot you know where and didn't. Buck heard 'em and took off, no shot. I get to camp same buck comes in chasing does, hard and fast. I didn't even have a chance to stop him so I remembered what happened to my uncle the day before and I aimed and fired. I hit dead center. The buck dropped to his knees and was out in minutes. The bullet came out just left of the center in the front chest. I took a tiny chunk from one of the hind quarters that was it. I was also hunting on the ground so the flat trajectory helped a little I'd say. I'd do it again if I only had a split second to shoot.

Re: Texas Heart Shot?

i've done it twice, once ona buck that had been gut shot that we were tracking and the other on a buck that was running away at 30 yards. both shots from my 12 guage hit a butt cheek... shattered the artery and kept on going, it has put them down quickly. not easy to dress but a very quick kill....if you are confident in the shot.
