lil hunter
Re: .45 or .50 It seems to me that .50 cal is more popular. I see a LOT more supplies for the .50 than the .45. As for huntin for whitetail I don't think it makes much difference. The 45 is usually a bit faster, but the 50 is a little bigger, so it makes a bigger hole. It just depends on what you want. JimT
Re: .45 or .50 I shoot a .50, but use sabots. The .50 seems to be much more popular, and there is alot more stuff for them at stores. A 45 will kill a deer all day, but i prefer the 50. Guest Xen
Re: .45 or .50 i use a .54, and every where i go, there are never any .54 supplies, but somewhere between the thousands and billions of supplies for .50 - if i had it to do over again, i'd have bought a .
Guest RandyWakeman
Re: .45 or .50 [ QUOTE ] which one is better and why on whitetails? [/ QUOTE ] Generally, the .50. The reason: barrel volume.

Guest RandyWakeman
Re: .45 or .50 http://www.chuckhawks.com/muzzleloading_hype.htm The more barrel length or caliber you have, the more BP / Pyro / Triple 7 you can efficiently use. The .50's (a generalization) can shoot any projectile a .45 can, with better ballistics------ and MANY they cannot.
magnatecsteve
Re: .45 or .50 A 45 cal will do a fine job, but like most of the other replies stated, the 50 cal is the most popular size so you can always find what you need. Plus, the 50 cal has a little more power/energy making it just that much better. I wouldn't personally shoot anything larger than whitetail with a 45. DannoBoone1
Re: .45 or .50 [ QUOTE ] which one is better and why on whitetails? [/ QUOTE ] Are you asking, "Which one will kill a whitetail deader?"? I have two ".50's" and am still on the fence about the .45 because of the reasons given by others above and: What is the accurate barrel twist for a .45 (apparently NOT 1:20!). What is the best length of barrel (my thinking is it needs to be 28", or better). Both Precision Rifle and Hornady make darned good .40 bullets for use in the .45, but bearing surfaces are vastly different. Seems like the smaller the caliber, the more THAT matters (at least it darned sure does with CF calibers). Getting these questions resolved, in addition to some of the concerns cited by others, I would to open to getting a .45, probably a replacement barrel for the Savage 10ML. P.S. There are non-saboted .45 conicals out there which used with the proper load at distances less than 100yds would take anything on the North American continent.
