Tominator
Gun season here in Ohio kicked off Monday. Most of you know I'm not a gun hunter, in fact, I don't like it much at all for various reasons. Tuesday I was cleaning up the yard taking advantage of some good weather when a guy pulls up in my driveway and says "I shot a nice deer and it ran onto your property, do you mind if I go look for it?" Of course I said no problem, but it kind of burns me because what little gun hunting I do do, it's in my field out back--right where his deer ran. So I'm thinking to myself "this is going to ruin me for a few days...." Anyway, we loaded up the guns and took a walk. I figured I might get a shot off on something else laying back there while he looks for his deer. Sure enough, 3 steps into my field a fat doe goes bounding away presenting no shot. 5 steps later another deer is off and running. When I got to the end of my lot, another deer snorted and took off. We got to the end of my lot and pushed back towards my house. By this time it's past legal time for me and wouldn't you know, another doe stands up in front of me, broadside at about 20 yards. 4 deer back there and me empty handed. The guy never did find his deer on both pushes. So, we talked a bit, looked for blood or tracks and didn't find anything, so I said "why don't you give me your name, address and phone number and I'll look tomorrow when we have light. (he had to go back to work I guess). Funny thing was, he didn't give me his number, just described where he lived. I thought that was weird. Fast forward to yesterday. I got home from work, glassed my field and saw a little buck near where they always bed down. I had no desire to shoot the little guy, but I told my son Joe and asked if he wanted to go for it, and he said "yeah." So we hatched a plan and it almost worked. I found that buck, got within 10 yards of it before it finally bolted to the south. My son was in a position to shoot to the east or north. So we talked about it, had a good laugh, and headed home through my neighbor's field. Guess what I found laying in the middle of my neighbor's field? Yep, the buck. A nice one too. Not a 160 like the guy said, but I'd guess it to be a 140 non-typ. So now I have a vague idea where this guy lives, but no phone number and a nice deer laying in a field. Sorry for the long story, but what would you do?
wyohunter
Re: What Would You Do? call your local gqame warden, give hjim the info that "hunter" gave you...ask if you should gut the animal or not and let the game and fish handle this
M00N
Re: What Would You Do? I'd call a game warden and allow him to handle the situation. I know if I shot a buck I'd leave my address and contact information. If the guy didn't leave that I'd question whether he harvested the deer legally or not. There really is no reason to not leave your contact information.
wtnhunt
Re: What Would You Do? Too bad the guy did not give you his number Chris. That would have made it too easy in this situation. Guess like the others suggested here might be best to let the warden deal with the situation.

Tominator
Re: What Would You Do? [ QUOTE ] Contact the Game Warden but also contact your neighbor. Perhaps that guy talked with your neighbor as well. [/ QUOTE ] I know for a fact that's not the case Lou because my neighbor works 3rd shift, and this guy said he couldn't get ahold of him. The only 1/2 lead I have is that this guy works for a local farmer. I called the local farmer hoping to get this guy's name and number, but I got no answer when I called twice yesterday. I know the farmer (Jack) goes to Florida every year, so he might be down there already. I know the DNR agent pretty good, his son and my son play in the same football league (different teams). I imagine Bill is very busy this week though.
gitcha_some
Re: What Would You Do? i hope the reason he wouldnt give you a clear answer on his phone number and where he lives isnt because he was poaching

nutz4bucks
Re: What Would You Do? Did the guy describe the deer he shot as a buck, or better yet a non-typical if so then try getting ahold of him or your best bet is getting your game warden involed then at least you know you gave it your best shot of finding the shooter.and you would feel better about your self when you look at the deer on your wall if the hunter isn,t found
revhard
Re: What Would You Do? to me something is a little fishy since he didnt leave a # or anything. id call the game warden and get them to tag the deer, and give him the info that the "other guy" gave you. if they can contact him they will
Tominator
Re: What Would You Do? Update I called the DNR agent for our county and talked to his wife for about 5 minutes. She said she'd pass on the message. I know Bill is pretty busy this week with gun season. I went out into my field last night, saw 4 deer including the same 4pt that I described earlier. Had a shot on him again, but passed again for some reason.
JoshM
Re: What Would You Do? If it was me and the deer was on my property i would of kept the rack. But if i had the guys address and number i would of called him up to see if the deer was his.

Still no word from Bill.
