RangerClay
How old was your kid when they saw their first deer gutted? Is there an appropriate age? I'm curious.
Guest Andrea
Re: How old was your kid... My kids have grown up seeing it. It's never bothered them. HOWEVER.......................I have a hilarious/horrific story of MY first experience as a child.

wtnhunt
Re: How old was your kid... My oldest probably 4 or 5, my 5 year old maybe 2 or 3. Dont think there really is an appropriate age.
Dogg6
Re: How old was your kid... Both of my girls have been watching it get done since they were old enough to walk into the woods with me. They are now 6 and 10. The both started helping in the processing parts when they were about 3 or 4. They started out cutting lean cuts with a butter knife, the following year they went to a pairing knife and by the 3rd year they were using a regular knife. So, not to much phases my 2 girls. firefighter
Re: How old was your kid... My son was 10 , first trip out, got his first buck, he wanted to gut it himself, after the first smell of it though, and him loosing his lunch he continued to finish the job, he wouldnt let me do it for him, he just wanted me to show him how to do it........ Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: How old was your kid... One was 4 the other was 10. The 4 year old thought it was cool the 10 y/o thought it was nasty. She is also the one who hates to get her hands dirty.
PAstringking
Re: How old was your kid... i had to gut my own at 12 when i shot my first deer. i had only seen it done once earlier that day. i think it depends on the child and the world he/she is exposed to
M00N
Re: How old was your kid... I feel it depends on the child. If introduced correctly to it they should do just fine at any age learning the gutting process. When they should actually attempt to gut a deer would depend on their maturity and ability to listen enough to handle a knife safely and their own will to try it, not forced. Tominator
Re: How old was your kid... I think my son was about 6 or 7. Unfortunately, the first and only one he's witnessed was the first deer my buddy shot. My buddy kind of botched the job with the first mistake being cutting the stomach. As soon as all that green goop came flowing out, Joe was off doing something else.
HuntnMa
Re: How old was your kid... they were between 9-11, i would of had them there sooner but i didn't hunt...i wouldn't make them participate(unless they wanted too)...working the check station i see lots of lil ones, some like it, some don't...just let them be the ones to decide if they are ready...one lil girl shot a nice hog, but she wanted nothing to do with it after that, the next weekend she was out there collecting jaw bones and such with me....then i had to take some glands/lymphnodes out of the head for CWD and she wanted nothing to do with it, lol...i think she is 6-7....just depends on the kid i think... need2hunt
Re: How old was your kid... Katie and Kestrel both recieved there first deer gutting session thnis year. Ages 6 and 10. Kestrel was probably 3 or 4 when she used to watch me clean ducks and geese. I think last year I showed them how to clean rabbits. All in all the deer session didn't bother them. Swamphunter
Re: How old was your kid... Gutted?? Never, I do it in the woods and my son has never been with me on a successful hunt yet. Skinned, processed and packaged...both my kids have been seeing that since they were 2.
Adjam5
Re: How old was your kid... I took my son Joe with me to shoot a doe on his 10th birthday 5 years ago, it was his 1st. He had no problem with what took place after the shot. Now on the other hand...my other 2 sons( AJ 12 and Michael 10) came and gave me some help to look a for a doe I shot with the bow last october. We found her dead in some briars and dragged her out. I proceded to dress her out, asking for their help in keeping her legs open. Those 2 had a hard time with the smell and did their fare share of gagging. I finished it alone. Their 1st gut pile
nutz4bucks
Re: How old was your kid... My son is 4 and he helped me track and hold the legs while i gutted the deer. dagnear lost his beans when i hit the stomach. as for age i don't know they can look away or walk away if they don't like it. don't think it could lead to too many bad things in life
