Really mad now

As I had posted earlier on, during the youth weekend a cousin of ours brought his boy onto our land (trespassing) and he saw a decent buck. He told his boy to shoot and the kid did. Only problem here is that the only part of the deer that was visible was the hind end......AND HE KNEW. The kid hit the buck in the hind quarter and they started trailing it but quickly lost blood, then gave up on it after just an hour.

We found out and it almost turned into the Hatfields and McCoys right there on the mountain. They now know they will be in a world of hurt if they come back.

Well I decided then and there that I wouldn't shoot any buck unless I found that one first and put it down. I've only killed deer with my bow and didn't want to ruin the streak on what they were certain was a 4 point, but I knew it would have to be done.

On the next to last day of the season, I knew where my father was sitting and I knew where some bucks were bedding, so I slowly walked the area towards my father. A few minutes into my walk I heard the 7mm-08 bark and made my way to dad. There he was with a big bodied 2.5 year old buck. He told me that as he started guttin' his buck out 2 more had walked by and one was the big boy I'ld been focused on during bow season (BIG 10 point).

We were admiring this buck when I saw the large hole in it's hind end. It was the buck my cousin's kid had shot a month earlier. Dad said he saw it walking with a very bad limp (almost dragging the hind leg) and that's when he decided to shoot.

The part the ticks me off more then anything, is that this bucks was only 2.5 and weighed in at over 150 lbs. the rack was a 6 point (they thought 4) and it had unbelievable mass.

Had this deer not been wounded it wouldn't have been culled from the herd so soon as we have strict managment in place. The buck would have been a real ridgerunner and would have done nothing but strengthen our herd's genes.

Sorry this is so long but I needed to get it out before I exploded on those good for nothin' so and sos.

Re: Really mad now

No, lil, our season ended yesterday.

Todd, I hear ya.......it's hard to believe we're related to them. That side of the family has always been that way and that's why they weren't supposed to be there to begin with.

One of them was up there the first day of turkey season too and cut me off, then Shawn (vtbowman) and I ran into him up the road the next day. He didn't know it was my truck parked at the jump off and said I was lucky he didn't get the bird he cut me off on or he would have done there usual deal when they think someone shouldn't be hunting near them.....and that's to spread the guts on the windshield of the truck. I just found this out all these months later and they better hope I don't see them around for a very long time to come.

Re: Really mad now

Some people just don't get it... What really sends a rage through you is when those people are family. Glad to hear you were able to take the deer, in light of the unfortunate circumstances. Most people never get a chance to rectify the situation and only end up stumbling on the deer (dead) months later.

The sad thing about this story (other than a wounded buck) is the hunting ethics your cousin is teaching his son. First--tresspassing and Second--poor shot selection.

Congrats to your dad!

Have to agree with Todd here. Congrats to your dad, glad he was able to put that buck down.
