Assateague... What decoys?

I'll be heading down to Assateague National Seashore for a couple days of hunting right before Christmas. What type of decoys would be best to use there? Hunted there last year with mallard decoys and Canada floaters but we didnt even see any mallards or Canadas. We were there middle of Dec. last year and saw mostly black ducks, bufflehead, and mergansers. I'm hoping the extra couple of weeks this year will get some geese down there.

Re: Assateague... What decoys?

i would definantly take black duck decoys, that area loads up with them...and i would put the blacks with as many goose decoys as you plan on setting because most of the time blacks will decoy to the geese. To attract divers any type of diving decoy with alot of white on it will do, bluebills, canvasbacks, or even buffleheads.

of course you should always throw out some mallards too.

and i dunno if you plan on shooting any but that area usually holds alot of brant so if you have brant decoys then set them out too

Re: Assateague... What decoys?

Thanks for the info... I hunt farm ponds up here in PA for ducks so my experience on divers is limited. We saw tons of black ducks last year. Shot our one bird limits. I really enjoyed hunting the big water and out of the two days we hunted there only two other groups were out. Looking forward to getting out there again. Any word on how the first season was there?

Re: Assateague... What decoys?

not that i know of right now but i can ask around if youd like?...i used to go there once a year every season but havent been in the last two seasons cuz my dad says hes getting too old for it LOL ( i live about 3 hours away from it)

divers mostly just decoy to visual things and dont really react to calling so usually decoys with a lot of whtie attract them

oh yeah i forgot to ask did you guys see any seaducks when your were there? like scoter and oldsqwau?(sp)

Re: Assateague... What decoys?

No... we didn't see any sea ducks. We did see a flock of about a dozen pintails fly over our blind. That's the only time I have ever seen them. We saw brant last year but the season doesn't come in until after Christmas. Out of the two days last year, the first day was slow, but on the second day we were surrounded by black ducks. I had never shot one in PA before, so that was pretty cool. Good news about the geese, I hope they're still around in a few weeks.

I go down with my old roommates from college to hunt there just for the experience. My one roomate has property to hunt on the river in St. Michaels but its just not as exciting as hunting in the marsh at Assateague. We have the permit to drive on the beach so that always adds to the excitement.

man i dunno if id chose assateague over st. michaels....thats one of the most beautiful places in maryland, id have to say....if you get on a good spot for river ducks like cans and bluebills you can smoke em up there

but sounds good i know its a long way off but let me know how you do when you get back

Re: Assateague... What decoys?

It's funny you say that... Last year, the ranger and other group signing in at Assateague thought we were crazy for hunting Assateague instead of St. Michaels. My buddy hunts St. Michaels all year though and I spend most of my time goose hunting in PA so its a change of scenery even if the hunting isn't as good. I'll be sure to bring this thread back after the trip...
