Tominator
OK, don't flame me because I'm new to this sport, but how long can you leave a ML with powder and bullet in the barrel? And, a follow up--is there any way to safely remove a bullet and said powder without actually firing the gun?
Hoyt03
Re: How Long? I shot one once that i had borrowed a year after it had been loaded and it shot fine. I personally would not keep one loaded that long but it had no ill affects on accuracy(in my case) My Omega is easy to unload without firing. Just remove the primer, unscrew the breech plug and push out the back end, or use a ball puller and remove from the muzzle then either dump out powder or pellets. (just use caution while doing this, incase it would go off) I know some guys will load up at the begining of season and keep that same load in until they either fire at game or the season is over then fire off the gun to unload. RangerClay
Re: How Long? Chris, If kept in a cool dry place the powder can be left in for 2-3 weeks. As for unloading, I use a T/C silent discharger. It is by far the safest way to unload a ML. I see now that Cabela's makes their own version of a silent discharger. Good luck! AJ
Re: How Long? I have handled guns with loads left in them over a year and they still shot great. I would not recommend this with a fouled bore as it will cause some pitting. I left my gun loaded until: 1. I took a shot at a deer. 2. I hunted in the rain. 3. End of the season. You can pull the load by a couple methods. Most manufacturers make a bullet puller like this one: Or by using a silent ball discharger like this one: If your gun is an inline, you can also remove your breeckplug and push the load back through the action. The drawback to this one is you can get powder and crud inside your trigger or action.
VTbowman
Re: How Long? I am one of those guys who loads at the beginning of the season and leaves it in there until I shoot at a deer or have to choke on yet anohter empty tag. If I dont shoot at deer I remove the breech plug and push everything out that way and save the bullet and pellets. The sabot I discard as it will have land/groove indents... Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: How Long? I won't do it, the year long thing, for reasons AJ has offered but a leave mine in for a couple of weeks. I'm trying not to chaoke on a tag this year. They go down awfully hard. Plastics is no fun at the other end either.
too_pointer
Re: How Long? I do also as stated. I load it the day before muzzleloader season, and it stays till I shoot it. Our season is only around 10 days. If not shot, I pull the breach plug out of my Encore and push it out, so easy and works great too_
horst
Re: How Long? Another reason I will unload mine is if its cold out and I have to bring it inside for some reason, the condensation will get your powder wet and cause a misfire.I usually just shoot it off and clean everything when I get home

Guest Xen
Re: How Long? i usually shoot it out every night, mostly just because i want to shoot after a day of packing around a gun
Guest HUNTIN162
Re: How Long? I leave mine loaded & out in the garage, so not get a big temp. swing. I always shot mine at the end of the season, to unload it, just to make sure it is still dead on. Then give it a good cleaning until next year. too_pointer
Re: How Long? I'm not into shooting and scaring everything away if I don't have too. Atthe end of the season, I pull the breech plug, and push the round, and the charge through.

PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
Re: How Long? Since leaving a load in my sidelock percussion in some damp weather caused me to have a hangfire and miss the biggest buck I ever shot at I usually don't leave it loaded more than a day or two. I got into this sport knowing it is a bit labor intensive keeping your rifle clean and reliable so I may labor a bit more than some of you but a hangfire is not going to cause me another miss at mr Big. wtnhunt
Re: How Long? With the black diamond, I have left loads in from the first ml season here at the start of November on up until the end of the second ml segment in December and not had any ill effects. Usually to unload, I just pull the breech plug and push the sabot and powder out from the muzzle with the ramrod, either that or fire it. LETMGROW
Re: How Long? AJ made a good point. If you shoot a fouled barrel you should treat it differently than a clean barrel. I personaly wouldn't let a fouled barrel sit for more than a couple days. A clean barrel with a load in it, I would let sit all season. Forgot to mention though, AJ probably lets his Savage Smokeless MZ sit year after year! LOL
too_pointer
Re: How Long? I think what kind of powder you use is also important. Real black powder I wouldn't leave. Smokeless powder should be fine, along with 777 which contains no sulfer like pyrodex does. too_
Tominator
Re: How Long? Well, y'all will be happy to know that my gun sat loaded for a month and fired just fine Wednesday morning. Of course, I missed, but that's another thread.
