Im pretty effective out to about 50, but limit myself to only take shots from about 40 yards. At low light its really risky to shoot past 30 even. Limbs and small branches become hard to see. Heck its hard to see those grey ghosts at low light even!

I wouldn't shoot past 45 yards, no 50 yards if I was desperate. I like putting my skills to the test. I've regularly practiced out to 50 yards, so why not take the shot? 50 yards is pushing it, mind you. I would only take that shot if it were a deer I def wanted to take and there was no chance of it moving closer.

Also, a huge buck would def get a zinger if it were 45-50 yards away. No doubt about it and I don't care if you disagree. 50 yards is braggable: 60 yards is irresponsible if you don't regularly practice it. 70 yards is crazy, but I've heard of people who have taken deer at 100 yards with a bow. I don't believe them, but I've heard people bragging.

Nothing closer than 40 yards is braggable anyway. i was hitting my targets consistently at 35 yards within 2 weeks after starting archery and I had a old junky bow, too. So why not push the envelope. Stop bragging about how ethical you are and start hitting your target at 40-50 yards.

Indians used to drive buffalo over cliffs you think they wouldn't take a 50 yards shot, you're on something. I'm taking that shot all day long.

I took lots of caffeine today, can you tell. smile.gif

Re: How far will you shoot at a deer?

i shoot competitions at distances out to 80 yards and 3Ds out to 50 yards. i do practice with broadheads out to 60 yards.

my pins go 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 .

i probably wouldnt take any shot past 45 yards. but if i hit a deer say at 20 and he walked out there and stood at 50 and gave me another shot i would take it. thats why i have a 50 and a 60.

i do know at 50 and 60 i can make that shot. i guess i really dont know what i would do if a huge buck stood out there at say 53 yards and made me try to decide.

i would prefer a simple 15 yard broadside shot any day of the week. wink.gif but sometimes you just never know what you would do. having a laser range finder allows me to be exact if needed and i have a shooting lane that goes to 53 yards.

The shot that I am most proud of is the 4 yard shot that resulted up in a great doe harvest. My emphasis is on the hunting skill that it takes to get within those super-close yardages. On that deer I actually was a lot closer at one point but couldn't get into a good shooting position until it cleared the other side of the large oak that I was standing behind. That deer had me almost coming out of my skin. That was a shot to be proud of!

Shooting skills can best be proven at the range. For me the skill at bowhunting is best shown by just how close you can get to your prey. That is the defining difference between bow hunting and gun hunting.

40 YARDS IS MY MAX, HOWEVER I HAVE NOT SHOT A DEER OVER 33 YARDS YET. I PRACTICE OUT TO 60 YARDS. THIS YEAR I HAD A BUCK OUT AT 59 YARDS, I HAD TIME TO RANGE HIM WITH MY RANGE FINDER, YES I PULLED THE BOW BACK TO FULL DRAW. I'D LET DOWN THOUGH, IT WAS JUST TO FAR. HE WAS DANDY BUCK, MAYBE A 150 INCH BUCK!? I HAVENT SEEN HIM SINCE confused.gifcool.gifmad.gifsmile.gifcrazy.gif
