Gospel Music:

Sometimes while I sit at my computer, I listen to some of what I call, “good old country gospel music”.

If I had to pick favorites, I guess it would be Tennessee Ernie Ford or Red Foley.

Even though they both have passed on, I think their gospel songs minister to the heart and soul with their voices and words, in a way that most singers just can’t muster.

I’m not saying that listening to Ernie Ford is a good replacement for reading your Bible on a regular basis, but sometimes I can get just as much from listening to his gospel music, as I get from listening to our preacher twice a week.

If you haven’t tried it, I recommend you just listen and let the music and words minister to you.

Some of my favorites are:

If I Can Help Somebody

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

In The Garden

How Great Thou Art

Take My Hand Precious Lord

Whispering Hope

Sweet Hour of Prayer

Did You Think To Pray?

I Love to Tell the Story

Amazing Grace

I could go on and on.

If I had a voice like Ernie Ford, I would not have spent 35 years delivering mail.

I guess he would be classified as “an oldie and a goodie”.

Re: Gospel Music:

Great post, popgun.

We just came back from a chili contest/hymn sing at church and sang Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Old Rugged Cross, and quite a few others.

I grew up unchurched but there is one song I think of often that really isn't a hymn. It's called "No I Won't Take Less than Your Love" by Paul Overstreet...the final verse:

“How much do I owe you?” said the man to his Lord.

“For giving me this day and every day that’s gone before.

“Shall I build a temple, shall I make a sacrifice?

“Tell me Lord and I will pay the price.”

And the Lord said: “I won’t take less than your love, sweet love.

“No, I won’t take less than your love.

“All the treasures of the world could never be enough,

“And I won’t take less than your love.”

The old stuff has a purity we can't find in modern songs. I don't listen to a lot of gospel but I love to walk in someone's house when they are playing it over the speakers.

My mother-in-law has end stage Alzheimer's. Gospel music and memorized prayers were the only things she could say about a year ago other than repeating what my father-in-law told her to say. It made an impression on my about how important her faith is to her, even in the absence of her mind. I hope I have that when the day comes.

Re: Gospel Music:

it's always good to listen to good clean music with a great message throughout the week, and not just on Sunday. Hard to get mad at someone driving or upset with life when you have some good religious music on.
