Gator
Re: food plot questions I planted some of the Green Patch Plus in September, the deer aren't touching it, don't really understand why either, unless we still have alot of acorns around. Bond
Re: food plot questions If you're surrounded by corn and soybeans, clovers should work for spring/summer. For the fall and winter(deer season), Winter wheat/rye/oats will work the best. Buck forage oats is basically winter oats but it will be cheaper from the co-op. In wisconsin I've realized that deer don't really like brassicas(rape, turnups, etc.)
Wimpy
Re: food plot questions I agree if you are surrounded by corn and soybeans those turnips and brassicas don't work very well.We planted corn and soybeans in our small food plots this year and the deer absolutely loved them, also I would try the Buck Forage Oats. Tominator
Re: food plot questions i planted whitetail institute's test plots in alpha rack, imperial clover, and another i don't remember the name of. near as i could tell, 3 things came up. clover, brassicas, and rye grass. of the 3, the deer seemed to hit the rye grass the most. good luck with your plots. AaronS
Re: food plot questions I currently have plots of Whitetail Clover, Alfa Rack, and Buck Forage Oats. The clover is 4 years old and approaching time to be replanted. The Alfa Rack is one year old, and the oats were planted this fall. I've seen the most activity in the Alfa Rack plot which is about one acre. Second is the oats which covers maybe 1/4 acre. I hope to have 2 new plots established by next fall....an acre of Hamman Farms mix and an acre of Tecomate monster mix.
wtnhunt
Re: food plot questions Would not recommend any bio logic products. Pennington rackmaster blends are good, so is hamannfarms seed blends. Have never personally tried whitetail institute or tecomtae, but hear good things about them. For clovers, you might want to check out hamman farms trefoil/clover blends and rackmaster clover supreme.
dogdoc
Re: food plot questions I don't know what it is about the full draw--I even planted a little spot this year (my brother picked up a bag on clearence at wal-mart) so I planted it. It has grown some huge brassica plants but the deer won't touch it---they go right to my Hamann Farms plot everytime. todd
wtnhunt
Re: food plot questions [ QUOTE ] they go right to my Hamann Farms plot everytime. [/ QUOTE ] Seeing is believing. I planted our hamann farms plot back in the spring and we had a terrible drought over the summer. I was worried we lost the grower plot, but with fall rains and fertilizer at just the right time it has come back pretty good. It did not likely grow to its potential, and I am really excited to see how much better it will be next year when the trefoil comes in good. Last night after shooting a doe, I had deer all over my grower plot and they seemed like they were never going to leave. They eventually made their way further off to our rackmaster clover plot, which looks great and has also really seen a lot of activity this fall. I have tried biologic full draw and have also planted biologics clover supreme around the outside edge of our grower plot. They walk right past the biologic full draw and the deer just wont touch the stuff here. They do eat some of the chicory that came up in the outside edges of our grower plot where I planted that biologic clover, but they usually walk out into the thicker clovers in the grower plot. They even seem to like the cheap clovers I bought here from our coop and eat it good, but just will not touch the biologic full draw.
