My buddy wants to get a smoker and he asked me for advice. I know little about smokers so I said I would ask the experts. grin.gif He would like to smoke ham and turkey for sandwich meat plus occasionally make jerky. What brand do you recommend and should he get gas or electric?

I would look into the gas smokers. I have the big Cheif, its electric and does not really cook the food, only gives it the smoke flavor. When using that i find myself finishing the cooking elsewhere. I would go with gas, or build your own small smokehouse which would be awesome.

Re: What brand of smoker do you recommend

I have a SmokinTex electric smoker and it works very well. Its the same as the Cookshack but a lot cheaper as it is imported. I looked at the Bradley but it only uses the hockey pucks of wood.

The drawback to the charcoal smokers is regulating the temperatures. The drawback to the cheaper un-insulated gas smokers is the same thing, they are not insulated. The insulated electric smokers like ST, Cookshack, Bradley, etc, can maintain their temperatures. They also use a lot less wood to get the same level of smoke flavor as the others. I have smoked pork shoulders, brisket, ribs, pork loin, chickens, summer sausage, and prime rib. I am very pleased with mine. The ST and Cookshack also have cold smoke plated that will allow the smoking of cheeses, pasta, and other food items that can not be heated but want the smoke flavor.

Re: What brand of smoker do you recommend

Had a brinkman charcoal smoker for years and it was wore out. Was going to get the smokin tex that AJ suggested, but cost just a little bit more than I wanted to spend. Ended up with the masterbuilt electric smoker in stainless from cabelas and have been very happy with it so far. Like AJ says, it uses very little amount of woods to get the smoke flavor and does a great job with it being electric it regulates the temp very effectively.
