Rhino
This past Saturday was opening day of our muzzleloader season and I sure gave my gun a workout. Since we had a hog pot going, Saturday morning I took a stand where I had killed 2 hogs last year. About 6:45 I saw a small doe pass and within 5 minutes I heard the a herd of something running toward me. Turns out a friend of mine had spooked a bunch of pigs getting to his stand a little late. 5 of them came running through the bottom to the east of me about 100 yards away. They made the mistake of slowing down and they began to cross the ridge to the north. I popped the lead hog and obviously couldn't load quick enough to get another one then. I deer hunted for another 2 hours before I decided to trail my hog. As I was trailing my hog, 2 hogs jumped up off their bed to take off. Only 1 made it to safety. I took all bets and presses in the hog pot. Sorry I didn't get pics of the 2 hogs I killed Saturday morning. After dragging them out and returning to camp, I went off to help my best friend look for a buck he shot at the prior afternoon while 2 other guys were cleaning does. Unfortunately my buddy missed his deer but we looked for a couple of hours anyway. Saturday afternoon I carried a climber in to hunt a rub line with some big cedar trees rubbed that I had located a week ago. I have a trail cam set on one of the big rubs but I wanted to let it run for 2 weeks. Anyway with only about 5 minutes left in legal shooting shours 3 does came walking in from the north that would put them passing about 30 yards behind me. I picked out the big one but then heard another deer coming up behind them. Glassing the deer I could tell he was a decent buck and would easily make our club's buck criteria but I honestly went through a few moments of indecision before I decided to take him. I shot my 1st Mississippi buck for this season as he was about to enter a thicket following the does. A picture is posted in the RT deer contest entry post. I don't think he's the buck that's making the big rubs but I'm happy with him. Oh boy...3 shots and 3 kills on opening day of our muzzleloader season. 2 more bucks to go for me here in Mississippi and our rut doesn't really get cranked up good for another 10 days or so. It's just starting to right now.
