brudaman340
i really want to know how to tan deer hides. i heard that the only thing you do is scrape it and salt it on a board streched out. i also heard, that you need to all kinds of other steps and procedures to finish it. RWTaxidermy
Re: help!!!! I wish it was as easy as just salting, however this is not the case. to properly tan you will need to remove all flesh, fat, and slimy membrane, then proceed with drying the skin with salt, the salt draws out all the unwanted proteins and water in the skin that promotes bacterial growth, bacteria is the main cause for hair loss, anyways after salting for 24 hrs shake off all salt and apply new salt for an addtional 24 hrs, after second salting rehydrate cape in a saline solution consisting of 1cup of salt per gallon of water, rehydrate until skin is back to a pliable state, remove skin and let drain for 30 mins, then mix up your acid bath (pickling), a good acid bath will consist of 4 gals of water, 4lbs of salt, and 2oz. of saftee acid, put skin in this solution for a minimum of 72 hrs and stir skin several times a day during this process. after pickling remove skin and let drain approx 30 mins, then shave the skin as thin as possible, after you have reached the thiness desired you must neutralize the skin in a neutralizing bath consisting of 1oz. baking soda per 1 gal of water (2gal mixture required) and let the skin soak for 20 mins stiring occasionally to insure neutralization. After soaking skin in neutralizing bath remove skin and remove as much moisture as possible by rolling skin in dry towels, after you have removed most of the moisture from the skin you can now proceed to tanning the skin, I would recommend either McKenzie Tan or Liqua Tan, apply tanning solution to skin and roll it up skin to skin and let sit overnight, the next day unroll skin and allow it to air dry as much as possible, when completely dry you can break the skin, this procedure usually consist of running the skin side over the edge of a table top to break down the fibers, when skin is throughly broken down apply a good leathering oil also made by Liqua Tan or McKenzie. There you should have it. a soft pliable skin along with aching arms and aching back.

I always can find time for projects, but that is a little much for me, and I bet I wouldn't be happy with my results.

timberlandtaxi
Re: help!!!! Your best bet may be Krowtann. It is a tan that combines all of the tanning steps into one. I belive they make a tanning oil that may be used on the leather after tanning as well.
