What caliber?

I just bought a T/C Encore 50 cal ML. I would like to get a rifle barrel for it, but have no idea where to start. I'm thinking if I ever wanted to hunt out of state for deer, pronghorn or elk, I would like to use a rifle. They are illegal in Ohio for deer, but I could use it for groundhogs and yotes (target practice).

Any thoughts or suggestions on calibers? .270? 30-06? .300? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: What caliber?

.270 works on elk but is not an ideal choice. 30-06 works well for everything you mentioned. .300 Mags do everything an '06 will do.....just further and handle heavier bullets better. Guess it depends on your recoil tolerance for shooting target & chucks with any of the three. .270 & '06 are cheaper to shoot. .300 Mags are as versatile as any gun gets for North America. .270 & '06 kick less. If you aren't bothered by .270 & '06 recoil......300's won't bother you either. A .300 Mag will gain you entrance into The Off the Porch Gang. grin.gif .270 & '06 won't.

Betcha I didn't actually answer any of the questions in your mind, did I?? smirk.gif

The 30/06 is never a bad choice. It's what I use for everything you have mentioned here in Colorado.

.308 is just enough to get the job done for deer, but you mentioned elk so I would go with the 30-06. I use 150grain 30-06 for deer hunting, and I'd day 180 grain 30-06 for elk. By the way, Fusion makes a great 30-06.

According to Winchester.com the difference between the 308 and 30-06 is pretty negligable. Shooting the identical bullet as the 06 the 308 has a significant amout of power over the 270 which seems to be a popular elk round.

I would have to say the the 308 is a lot more than "just enough for deer"

Re: What caliber?

Well, two of the calibers you mentioned are of the same "family". The 270 and the 30-06 are both on the same casing. A 270 is a 30-06 case necked to carry a .277 bullet. As far as for the game you mentioned any of the 3 will work. Personally, I don't prefer any caliber with "mag" in it. So I'm more about the 270 or the 06. My caliber of choice is the 270. Loaded with 150 grain partitions or a comparable 150 grain bullet the 270 will anchor elk, moose, and bear easily. You can back it off to the 130 grain bullets and get very fast and flat trajectories for antelope, deer, and varmints. For me the caliber of choice would be the .270

Re: What caliber?

THE 30-06 WINS Hands down as far as versitility!

1. Load it with a 150 grain spitzer and you have an excellent pronghorn load

2. Load it with a premium 165gr partitoned bullet and you have a "can do no wrong" whitetail load

3. Load it with a premium 180gr "Fail safe" "Barnes" "Swift" or "Nosler" and you can harvest anything that walks in the US Forests.

4. You can even load or purchase 200 or 220 grain bullets for close shots in the timber or for hunting bear over bait.

Bonus! 130gr hollowpoints are fun "chuck bustaz" grin.gif

Re: What caliber?

Been using a .270 on deer here for a good while Tom, and it is very effective. That would be my first choice. Think if I were going to get anything to hunt deer with aside from a .270 it would be in a .308 or a 30-06. Cannot go wrong with any of those three.

Actually for yotes and hogs, you might also consider the .243, it shoots pretty darned flat, holds good energy on out there a good ways, and is also effective on deer, but would be too light for elk.

Re: What caliber?

i would get a 308 win for it. i just love the 308. best caliber i have ever owned and will take down anything we have in north america except for one but you could make it happen with a heavy bullet the brown bear and you would have to be really close to make it happen. the 308 is known for long range and for good killing shots,.

go with your feelings and you will go fine if your looking for a good all around weapon for hunting the 308 is in my opinion the creme of the crop. like was sad before the 308 does come in bullets and reloads for critters but a friend and i built me a 243 and that is to me the best for critters like yotes and other animals that are smaller than deer. an excellent pronghorn caliber and i will use a barnes tsx bullet for either my 08 or my 43
