Gutting gloves

Re: Gutting gloves

I use bare hands too, because I like to know where my fingers are with that sharp knife.

I've been thinking about packing gloves for cleaning though, because sometimes my friends will call me down to gut their deer for them, when I'm in my street cloths, and it just doesn't feel the same getting all bloodied up.

Just use those purple surgical gloves bro, they're practically skin tight so you know exactly where your fingers are, there not flabby at all. And you should protect yourself, you never know man.

Re: Gutting gloves

i dont understand what you would get infected from?

as i stated above, i am a bare hander, mainly because gutting gloves, surgical gloves, and anyhting other then bare hands seems to affect my ability to feel.

when i have used gloves it made me more nervous when gutting because i thought i was going to lose grip and cut myself. i am willing to ware gloves if someone can prove to me that a cut can get infected on my hand. are we talking a papercut or a gash?

just asking

A cut on your hand when exposed to blood or secretions that you may come in contact with while gutting a deer that is positive for bovine tuberculosis can cause you to contract the infection. I believe there was a case of this back in 2005 in Michigan. That's exactly how the guy contracted the disease. He was gutting and cut himself by accident getting the animal's blood in his wound. I remember reading the article on it, but don't have a copy handy to link to. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

A lot of contagious mammal related diseases can be transferred via the infected blood getting into another's blood stream. If you get a cut that has any sort of bleeding from it that's a pathway to contracting any disease a wild animal may carry that can be transferred via bodily fluids such as blood or secretions.

If your gutting a deer with thin latex gloves and you slip with your knife...I highly doubt (unless your knife is really dull) those gloves will stop the blade.

I guess if you already have a cut or open wound on your hands...then it would be a good idea to wear them or get a buddy to gut it for ya! If you don't have an open wound...those thin latex gloves really aren't going to do any good with a slip of the knife or even ripping them on a rib or something. JMO

I honestly don't wear them...never have. Not because I'm not concerned about catching something...but because of the reasons I stated. I've gutted deer for my buddy who had open wounds...sure he'd do it for me if needed. wink.gif

Met up with our dairy AI semen supplier.Great timing, as I was out of gutting gloves. I use the sleeves that are used in artificial insemination. I got a box of 100 for $11.00 compared to more than $2.00 for a pair from walmart. They work great and are full length too. smirk.gif

Great idea!! But most of us don't know any Dairy suppliers!! For the $2.00 price of the blaze orange arm sleeves and latex glove combo, it's a small price to pay for something that works awesome. And the best part they sell those anywhere. wink.gif

i completely agree. i understand that there is a chance to contract TB or some other disease but if i slip with my knife then it doesnt matter what i have on my hands because my knife will cut right through it.

i used to use the big gutting gloves when i first started to gut my own deer and noticed that they did more harm then good. i felt that you couldnt feel as well with gloves on.

to each his own i guess

Re: Gutting gloves

i will never gut a deer without surgical gloves on... Blood is blood and disease's are everywhere ........ I always have to think that, it only takes 1 time of being infected to ruin your day... and maybe more.... I always keep 4 sets of gloves with me while i'm in the woods. And a full box in the truck.....

I agree with that...but unless you have an open cut already on your hands...how can infected blood hurt? Like I said eariler...the latex/surgical gloves aren't strong enough to withstand a slip of the knife or a snap on a rib.

If there were a stronger type of glove that you could still feel your way around...then I guess I could see a purpose for them.

BTW, what do you folks do with these latex/surgical/plastic gloves after your done gutting a deer?

Re: Gutting gloves

Let me ask? How long has it been since you went to your doctor or dentist and he or she didn't put on a pair of gloves before touching you?

We used to field dress deer without protection, but with the advent of Lyme disease, Rabies ,CWD and who knows what else, why take chances?

Take your time while field dressing and you shouldn't be cutting yourself.

Obviously firefighter has had this drilled into him. Better safe than sorry!

Thats a little different senerio...I'm not putting my hands in my mouth after gutting...and if I had an open cut on my hands...I'd wear gloves or get someone else to do it.

Yeah, I want my dentist to wash his hands and put on a new pair of gloves before sticking his hands in my mouth...I don't know where his hands been. Don't really care if he puts his fingers in his own mouth after touching someone else.

I'll ask again (not trying to start a fight...just curious because I don't know) but how if you don't have an open wound on your hand, can you catch Lyme, Rabies, CWD, TB etc...?????

Re: Gutting gloves

I always wear gloves-I just don't like getting blood on my sleeves-you don't roll them up very high in Northern Sask lol. When your done gutting with an A'I' glove you just turn them inside out and roll them up and put them in your pack or pocket. Your still clean and can keep on hunting rest of the day. I A'I' 1-2000 cows a year so gloves don't bother me much lol.
