timberlandtaxi
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks If you want to use the maceration method (rotting of the skull) I would suggest you fill a tub with water and let it sit in there for a month or so. Make sure you have it pretty clean to begin with, and using pond water instead of tap water will get the process started more quickly. Burying the skull will make it difficult to whiten the skull when finished. The quickest method would be simmering the skull in sodium carbonate (sal soda or soda ash) for about 45 minutes and cleaning and rinsing the meat from the skull. OUTSIDER
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks Hydrogen peroxide works wonders for the fine work towards the end of the process...warning too long will mess it up badly... WVreddot870
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks I boil mine in sal soda and paint them white. I used peroxide in the past but it will also bleach any part of the horns it touches while soaking. I've done a few bear and deer skulls and I think they look better paited white. Bownarow
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks I skinned out the head as well as I possibly could to begin with. Next I boiled the skull in water and a little dish soap that acts as a degreaser. Every 15 minutes or so, take the head out and peal and scrape what you can off the skull, then put it back in the water. Repeat this process till you get all the meat and such off the bone. The brain will be a little harder to deal with. I ended up opening up the spinal cord opening a little larger with a saw until I could get my needle nose in and grab all the membrane stuff out. The last step in the cleaning process is to blast out all the left overs with a garden hose or pressure washer. Now that the skull is good you can glue back on any pieces that fell off! I then painted on 40 volume peroxide and let it set overnight. I washed the skull off again, let it dry, and then repeated the peroxide step a couple more times till the skull was nice and white. Finally a sprayed the skull down with a clear coat paint to seal it up and give it a little shimmer. Slap the sucker on a board and you should have an awsome skull mount! Good luck!! timberlandtaxi
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks Tip: Take the brain out before simmering in hot water(don't bring to a full boil). I use a wire and "mix" and mash the brain in the cavity through the spinal opening. Just go round and round w/ a heavy guage wire and the brain will come out in just a minute or two. You will still have to pull the membrane out w/ a pair of hemostats after you have simmered the skull for a while.
Widowmaker
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... thanks I just got done with mine. I skinned the head, cut off as much meat as I could and then boiled the head for about 4 hours in water and dawn detergent taking the head out frequently to scrape and spray the head with a pressure washer. Be careful with a pressure washer because the nostral cannal is very thin stuff. It turned out very white. After I got that done I made a paste out of borax and coated and packed every part of the skull to preserve the bone. I didn't even use peroxide and it looks great!! Adjam5
Re: Skull mount.....any tips would be great... tha Whatever you do...don't use bleach. It is acid and will most certainly eat away the skull and its bone. Peroxide, the type from beauty supply works best. Good Luck!
