AdvantageTimberLou
I usually hear it from guys who can't sit still for more than 30 minutes. They like to wander the woods in "stalk" mode. Now don't get me wrong, stalking is effective but the guys I'm talking about are not doing it right. They are just walking and shooting at tails. Then as you mentioned they don't seem to see any deer. I try to limit all noises and walk as quietly to and from my spot. Face it, your in their bedrooms and you need to slip in undetected. It would be like someone coming into your house from another door but slamming it, you'd hear that. Now if someone closed it slowly would you still be able too? Got to try all the little things to help your chances and closing doors and keeping sounds down can only help your chances. Lou
MUDRUNNER
Re: Before and After The Hunt THE LESS NOISE THE BETTER.I DO KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT THAT DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO HOW MUCH NOISE THEY MAKE GETTING INTO THEIR SPOT,AND MORE TIMES THAN NOT THEY ARE UNSUCCESFUL.UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE A FEW LIKE THAT IN ONE OF MY GROUPS AND IT AGGRAVATES ME AND I NORMALLY SEE A LOT FEWER DEER WHEN I'M HUNTING WITH THEM. huntinsonovagun
Re: Before and After The Hunt I turn my music down before I get there. I have to slam my doors because otherwise it will not shut, running my battery down. I still see deer, and this is within 150 yards of where I parked. I try to be as quiet as possible. I think to see deer, you need to be set up in the right place and be as scent free as possible. If you get to your spot early enough, you may spook some deer off, but I think they will be back before long.
johnf
Re: Before and After The Hunt I turn my radio off when I get within a 1/4 mile from my spot. When I get out of my truck I make as little motion as possible. To shut my door, I use my backside and push untill it latches.
billygoat
Re: Before and After The Hunt I tend to be as quiet as possible when I get around my stand... for my bow stand, I park almost a 1/2 mile away and take my ATV to w/in 200 yards of my stand, and I tend to drive in very slow. Deer don't seem to spook w/ 4 wheeler as bad as w/ truck.
Swamphunter
Re: Before and After The Hunt I am always as quite as possible when arriving. I am lucky though in one aspect because I usually hunt at leat 1/4 - 1/2 mile from the road I park on. There is a guy who lives near where I park and he runs a body shop out of his garage and the deer have became accustomed to slamming doors and voices. I have actually sighted and killed nice bucks with-in several hundred yards of this house also. Observing the deer, they seem to pay no attention to this garage nor barking dogs down the road. Luckily...
wtnhunt
Re: Before and After The Hunt I walk out the door and walk to my stands, but try to make as little noise as possible. I will go so far as to drag the box blade as close as I can get to my stands kicked to an angle to remove leaves in a path to get in quieter and then rake away leaves from the bottom of the stand. Jeramie
Re: Before and After The Hunt I think it mainly depends on the area. Me and my brother hunt my family's ranch. The deer there are just as skittish as anywhere else but they expect some level of human interaction. I was bow hunting and my grandma started driving through the field to check calves. I about freaked but about 30 minutes later they jumped into the field as usual. They expect it. Every time we go hunting my brother and i meet at the house and gear up. We usually talk and shut the doors hard, etc. It echos through the timber but again, the deer expect the interaction. To be quite honest, I could kill a deer off of a tractor easier then I could by being sneaky. During the winter they ignore the tractor completely. ladydiehard
Re: Before and After The Hunt In the hardwoods that I hunt in WI, slamming doors, talking around the cabin, even chopping wood has no effect on whether I will see deer from my stand which is located about 150 yards behind the cabin on top of a ridge. In fact, we've had deer to walk or run up on us as we are standing outside the cabin yakkin or unloading or loading gear from the trucks, or chopping wood. Now the cedar swamp is a different story. Any noise there will spook deer for sure. They are used to it being quiet in the swamp. Unlike the hardwoods where they may hear different noises. I make as little noise as possible when actually approaching my stand but around the cabin, it doesn't seem to matter.
