Randy
I was just thinking. In the middle of winter when everything is froze up, and there is very little green feed left for the deer, where do deer get water? Do they survive off the water contained in twigs and evergreen needles?
BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: Winter deer survival? They will lick ice ... they also paw at waters edge to break up the ice ... they have a natural survival instinct ... pretty neat ... these are just a couple of the things that I have noticed ... wtnhunt
Re: Winter deer survival? Would imagine they get some moisture from what they eat. Steve I am sure is alos right that they will lick ice. See our horses and cows doing that from time to time when the water hole is froze over. NEIOWAARCHER
Re: Winter deer survival? Around here the deer migrate to the lower creek botttoms and springs. When all the ponds freeze up you will see large herds of deer around the creeks.

[/ QUOTE ]I Didn't know if there was a scientific explanation. I had a guy at work ask me and I told him I didn't know. He also asked about pheasants. Do they eat snow? Do they not need as much water when it is very cold? Can they get enough water from eating twigs and such? Do they get water from licking ice? In Canada unless they find a spring where do they drink? or don't they? It got me thinking about it. What do they do? Birds can fly long distances to find water. It's not that I am overly concerned about there well being because you are right they have made it this long. I was just wondering HOW they survive.
