captkb44
A few weeks back, I was invited to take my son on a spike/doe hunt and we were able to make it out yesterday evening. We get in the stand around 3:00 and within 10 minutes we had deer coming in. We had a real small yearling doe right in front of the blind, not 25 yards. It was great just to sit there and watch him watch all the deer come in. He got pretty excited several times, and each time I would have to calm him down and get him to take some deep breathes. There had been two spikes seen coming to this feeder on several occasions and the ranch owner really wanted these removed off the place. Everything that came in first were does and small yearlings. Next a real nice 9pt and 8pt came in and a big doe. We didn’t see her until she started to blow at us…………….we were a little preoccupied watching the bucks and this doe had walked up within spitting distance of the blind. They run off and 30 to 45 minutes pass and we see no deer. My son is now starting to get upset with me, for not letting him shoot one of the mature does we had seen earlier. I kept telling him that when the feeder went off, the deer would return and hopefully one of the spikes would show up. He had some serious doubts, until the feeder actually went off. We see several does make there way towards the feeder and then a few small bucks and finally two spikes show up. The one we wanted to shoot never would be still long enough for him to get a shot on. We changed plans and started focusing on the other spike. He was behind several other deer and then he follows a doe down the road towards the blind. The doe steps out of the way and he turns broadside and he put the crosshairs right behind the front shoulder. BOOOM…………..WHOOOOOP!!!! Perfect shot and he stumbled maybe 15 yards and piled up. Both of us were very excited and it took several minutes for us to calm down. He had just harvested his 1st deer and I was there to watch it all happen. It’s not a wall hanger, but its definitely a hunt neither of us will forget. A big thank you goes out to Mike Rattan with the Rockin R Ranch for providing this hunt.
