Missed160
Last night was a perfect night for bow hunting. I went to a 130 acre farm I have permission to hunt. To the south of the farm there are homes on 5-10 acre lots. The nearest 2 homes to one of my stands is about 300 yards. So I am sitting on stand between a swamp (bedding area) and cut corn & Alphalfa fields. Just about prime time, I here something coming through the woods. I get my bow & turn around, and.... two german shepards and a big mutt of some type. I hear them barking over by the houses sometimes. So they come through the woods, see my deer decoy if the field & go nuts. They tore at the decoy as fast as they could & realized when they were withing feet that something was wrong. They investigated it for a bit then just headed back in the direction they came from. The way they tore after the decoy, I'm sure they would have chased the deer if it was real. So my question is, what would you have done? I know it's easy to say shoot em, but that opens many many cans of worms.
Guest Finn
Re: What would you do? Not much you can do besides hope they are fenced in next time you hunt. I certainly wouldn't shoot them.
johnf
Re: What would you do? Watch in horror. If they would do that to a deer they would probibly do it to another animal or God forbid a kid. I would find the owners and put it to it them that way. If that didn't work I would contact animal control about getting them put up. Even good family dogs packed up like that are a recipie for desaster. Hoyt03
Re: What would you do? If they are somebody's dogs and running off their property maybe you can talk to the owner to try and get them to keep the dogs from running off. That is a real bummer though, I bet alot of deer do not come into that field until dark now b/c i'm sure they have been chased by the dogs before. Tominator
Re: What would you do? Call animal control and hope that there's a law against letting dogs run loose. I called animal control on my neighbor after repeated attempts to get her dog to stop running wildlife on my property. I haven't seen the dog since, but I bet I do in the spring. Straight Shooter
Re: What would you do? John is right, packed dogs are terrible. I had to call the animal control officials two years ago on three large shepard-lab mix dogs. They charged me and killed a few deer around the house. If I'd had my pistol in my hand instead of the trash cans, there would have been some dead mutts. If there is a leash law, contact your local animal control or the owners and inform them of their dogs activities.
firefighter
Re: What would you do? I had a similaer situation happen, a hound was chasing something in the woods near me, he eventually found and sat by me panting.... i pet him on his head and told him to get ....... he ran off in the direction of his home. I swung by the local dnr office and informed them but they said there's nothing that they could do. the dog did have tags, but i didnt look at em, next time i'll swing by the houses near that area, i very seriuosly doubt that the dog would attack a human, just dont want some slob shooting the dog, it's too cute of a hound........ EKYhunter
Re: What would you do? I was hunting out of my double bull last year and group of about 6 or 7 dogs came up to my blind and began growling and snapping their teeth. Needless to say I didn't like this at all. I put a Muzzy tipped Beman through the biggest one and he ran a short ways and died. I think I should clarify that the land owner I was on has instructed me to kill every dog I see on his property. Also, here in eastern KY most people do kill any dog they see in the wild unless it has a collar. Our deer herd here is expanding but one of our long running issues as far a deer population/management has been unleashed dogs so most people here kill 'em. We also kill ferrel cats as well.
