My "sock drawer" gun is a Springfield Armory 12 guage pump with a 16.5 inch barrel.

I hope you have a NFA permit for that thing, or its a typo and you meant 18.5", because its a felony to possess it otherwise.

Re: One in the pipe....

when i have my standard carry gun on me, yes, round chambered.

i think for most people, a lot of it depends on the type of firearm you have. there are some guns that i just don't personally feel comfortable carrying a round chambered in, mostly the guns where the only safety is on the trigger.

at home, the situation is different... chamber a round and top off the mag, but, i keep my gun where my daughter can not get to it.

also, you have to be careful with some guns/mags... there are certain mags where when topped off with a round chambered, they have issues feeding that first round in - always a good idea to take your gun to the range and try it out

More power to ya all.......I myself just got a new handgun a few months ago as well. Just a question though, how many of you guys have had someone break in or have had to use your firearm in self defense? Just sounds like some of you guys might live in some pretty dangerous areas or something.

Re: One in the pipe....

Got 2 pistols locked and loaded in a pistol box in the bedroom. Got an 8y/o and 2.5 y/o in the house. I keep the key to the box and the gun cabinet down stairs on a chain around my neck when I sleep. One is a standard key and one is a "tubular" key, so it is easy to feel which one is which. May seem a little excessive, but kids can get REAL curious! Not taking ANY chances!@

Re: One in the pipe....

when i was single and no one in the house but me there was a 12 gauge with a shorter barrel locked and loadede at all times. then my nephew came around so it was the 12 ga in under the bed with a round or 2 in the night stand. now that i have kids in the house.... guns are locked in one cabinent and the ammo is in another room in a different cabinent. i loive in a little city with hardly any crime, but the bat is under the bed!!! heck we don't even lock the doors on occasion when we forget!! LOL

Re: One in the pipe....

One point I woul like to make about shotguns as home defense weapons. They are that, Defense. For outside clearing drills they can't be beat. But, for house clearing they are not as effective as a Pistol. A shotgun can actually be grabbed and used against you (as can a carbine). My choice would be your favorite carry pistol in the strong hand and a E2D Exective defender light (Surefire) in the other. The on/off button is in the very back and the front of the light serves as a weapon as it is serrated and sharp (5 petals around the lense). The weak hand can be the blocking hand while the strong hand engages the target. While weapons lights are good for law enforcement, I like a seperate light for home defense. It serves a distinct purpose.

That's a valid point, but I think the advantages of being able to hit and incapacitate an attacker with that first round outweighs the negative of the possibility that the shotgun can be snatched away from you. Especially if you pay attention to how you approach doorways and other blind spots.

And I guess if you're worried about someone grabbing it, you could always wrap the barrel with razor wire! grin.gif

Good.....and valid point. Training is everything! Kind of hard to downgrade a $200 pump gun that can be used as a meat shreader!! 00Buck at close range can be about as nasty as it can get. I LIKE THE RAZOR WIRE IDEA!......Shows I'm in with the right group of guys wink.gif
