Almost lost him

Monday night they were taking my dad back in for surgery. It was pretty simple actually, they were just going to tighten the stitches on his stomach up some more.

They got the wound uncovered and found it wasnt healing, the edges of the incision were actually dying off. They had to open him back up and cut the dead tissue away from the wound. After they opened him up however they found the infection we were hoping to avoid inside his stomach cavity. They had to put him back on the vent and go in and clean it out.

After the surgery things started going bad quickly, his O2 stats dropped badly and his liver numbers were going up, on top this he was still dealing with the infection and his blood sugars/insulin levels started going nuts. There was a cyst on his pancrease that was compressing some blood vessels and soething they called a vent confused.gif

The doc told Mom if there was anyone that hadnt said goodbye to call them, his liver looked to be failing and his O2 was so bad they didnt think they could get him off the vent. His kidneys also seemed to be shutting down at the time.Never quite figured out what caused that.

We made a 5 hr drive down there and they started taking him off the anestesha and waking him up a little, then they pulled the vent.He suprised everyone by coming off it with little trouble as long as they kept the oxygen on him.

The first two days the doctors wouldnt comment much one way or the other if he was gonna pull through or not.Thursday his liver numbers started looking better and Friday morning his blood sugar started coming down to a better level.Unfortunately in that time he developed another infection caused by the vast amount of antibiotics they were giving him, this one was nothing serious and pretty common.Saturday they took him off the oxygen and his O2 stayed up where it should be.Hes still fairly critical but things are looking better again.Hes got a long healing process and will be on a feeding tube for some time but theyre now looking at moving him back closer to home if things continue to improveNot sure how this will affect his chemo treatments yet, this may not have done more then bought him a little time, guesse we will have to wait and see.Anyway, after a week down there Im finally back home and a little less stressed out, things are going the right way again and now its just a waiting game to see what happens next crazy.giffrown.gif
