OUTSIDER
I have been readin the Jesse Jackson post and it made me wonder. Do we really even have a freedom of speech?? Now before anyone calls me a racist or something take a walk with me. What is freedom of speech?? Should it be limited to things that are not offensive? Why can you not say what you want?? why are certain words tagged as inapproitate? Why should i be limited to what i say because someone is offended?? I have a right to say what i want...As they also have a right to be offended and not like what i have to say. I am offended when people who work certain places cannot say merry christmas, in my opinion that is a breech in the freedom of speech. I just wanted to raise the issue and see what you fellas thought about it.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Freedom of Speech... Freedom of Speech, as outlined in the First Amendment, is meant to protect an individual's right to express themselves without government censorship. Especially in the areas of politics, religion, and the press. It does not, however, give an individual the right to say or print anything they want at anytime or anyplace they choose. OUTSIDER
Re: Freedom of Speech... Very vauge and generalized. So who is to regulate my freedom of speech if not the government... And who gave them the authority to do so. I am really intrigued by this question i ask. Id love to have a good nice clean non finger pointing conversation about this. Strut10
Re: Freedom of Speech... [ QUOTE ] As far as Im concerned you can say what you want, but I dont have to listen. [/ QUOTE ] Other than speech that could risk catastrophe..... i.e. yelling "fire!!" in a movie theatre.......a person should be allowed to say whatever he pleases. This includes speech that is offensive to any and all racial, ethnic, political, or any other groups. I, in no way condone offensive slurs. But if it be a person's choice to verbally demonstrate his ignorance..........it is his right to do so. Society can be the judge of the worth of the person and his words. wtnhunt
Re: Freedom of Speech... Freedom of speech is meant to be just that. Anyone has the right to be offended by what another might say, they also have the right to remove themselves from that conversation.
johnf
Re: Freedom of Speech... Any freedom requires responible use. It's consiquences can be great in both directions. I have a perfect right to call you a moron, call your wife fat and your kids stupid, but I might get my block knocked off in doing so. Any freedom requires temperence to be effective.
