Why different colored vanes?

Just curious as to why some people use different colored vanes on their arrows. Does it make it easier to see the arrow in flight or does it just serve as an easier way to knock your arrow type of purpose? Also, im getting new carbons for christmas and was wondering what colors you guys recommend that make it easy to see my arrow in flight. Thanks in advance

Re: Why different colored vanes?

It's all in the shooters preference on fletching colors. I use all white with a white nock, for visability purposes. You just can't beat watching the white fletchings bury in the side and disappear on a deer. The odd color vane is primarily used to nocking purposes, to me, it can either go on one fo two ways. One of which is the right way, if it's wrong you'll figure it out quick.

Re: Why different colored vanes?

I personally like one black and two white vanes. The white ones are easier to see in flight and the black lets me do a quick lineup for nocking my arrow on the fly. I used to have the flo orange vane instead of the black, but since I'm thinking about archery turkey hunting I'm starting to stay away from the colors that stick out to the turkeys too much. All personal preference when it comes to vane colors.

I change the colors year after year...just to mix it up a bit. I always have a c*ck feather either different or marked if they are all white.

Same here. I'am always changing colors, but still like the all white feathers with white dipped arrows. I always have arrows in the fletcher. I will usually have groups of 6 matching, but I'am constantly changing something.

Re: Why different colored vanes?

Thanks for the help guys. I was just curious as to whether or not an arrow fletched with 2 of the same color and one different color was easier to see (maybe something to do with the human brain and eyesight??? no idea just thought id throw that out there) I think Ill put all white Blazer Vanes on my arrows and Bohning's White Tiger striped wraps...should look pretty sweet and easy to see in flight. Thanks again

Remember to mark your c*ck feather, or use a different color so you nock your arrow properly...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes or just use the mark on your nock that was put there for just this purpose. When it's dark out and you get to your stand you can nock an arrow and know instantly that it is on correctly. Though during the daylight it is easier to see where the hen vanes are or where the "rooster" vane is. grin.gif

Re: Why different colored vanes?

I always had one vane that was what we call the **** vane that was different so you knew how to line your arrow up on a two prong rest, but now that I have gone to a biscuit rest it doesn't matter. I like to use two flo. orange and one white. Easy to see the orange and the white gives you a good color of blood.

Re: Why different colored vanes?

As the others here have said...the different colors help people line up the correct nock position by sight.

Harry mentioned something that alot of people dont even know...theres a small raised bump on the nock(near the arrow shaft) that can also be used to help line up the nock by feel providing you have the nock turned correctly in the arrow shaft.

Personally I use all the same color feathers on my arrows. I shoot a Muzzy Zero Effect arrow rest so nock position is not something I have to worry about!

Last winter in a small field acrossed the street one of the neighbor kids had thrown a blaze orange playground ball over their fence. It sat on top of the snow seemingly all winter. Every single time I walked out of my front door my eyes were drawn to it like a magnet!

My arrows all have a white ADKhunter Reflective Wrap with Blaze Orange feathers.

Here is a pic of one of them at night in my yard...hence my choice for a reflective wrap wink.gif

P.S. This is how to properly use a perfectly good childrens dinner plate grin.gif

My arrows are upper left(I use all feathers now)

Re: Why different colored vanes?

This is what I currently shoot, plus I doubt Ill change too! But the white is soooo easy to see in flight!

What I was shooting!

But I also use the nock to tell me how the arrow needs to be nocked on the string. Bohning Signature Nocks have a little bump which I use as a nocking aid.

Re: Why different colored vanes?

i like to shoot a odd color on one vane so thats its easier for me to line up the nock for hunting. currently im shooting 2 white and 1 flo yellow.

Re: Why different colored vanes?

This is from someone who likes to be in a treestand an hour before daylight with an arrow nocked: My vanes are all the same color. I can't see colors at night when I nock an arrow unless I wanted to use a flashlight. That's why I rely on the ridge on Gold Tip nocks. I feel the ridge in the dark and know to treat it as the vane that points at the 9:00 o'clock position to me (RH).

Re: Why different colored vanes?

I with you Dg, the Easton uni-nocks have that ridge also. I just hold the flats of the nocks with my thumb and index finger, then slide my thumb out the shaft, if it hits a fletching. I now can tell which way to attach my arrow to the string. I'm in no hurry in the dark so it doesn't matter if it takes a little extra time and if it's during daylight. I've been shooting all white vanes for so long it's second nature to load one on the string even in the heat of the moment. Good huning guys!

Re: Why different colored vanes?

I have shot all same color, and shot with one odd color .When I use to shoot aluminum arrows I had some wild turkey feathers on my camo arrows man they looked great .But you couldnt see them in flight. As far as nocking I shoot a fall away so it doesn't affect me which way vanes is turned

Re: Why different colored vanes?

Like the other guys said, one for knocking purposes, but most of all it is personal preference. I use two neon green, and a neon yellow, just what I have used for many years. grin.gif
