RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

Funny, we have people that dont live in IL saying there isnt valid reasons for this. The answer is this, or aleast as it applies to my county. There are several major highways through the county and several towns of 750 people or larger. Its a simple saftey issue. We are roughly 2.5 hours from Chicago. The hunters the come out here from Chicago, as a hole, are the absolute worst hunters i have ever seen. I wouldnt trust them with a Daisy, much less a 30-06 with 500 yard range. There isnt anything wrong with our shotgun and muzzleloader seasons and I hope we never had a centerfire deer season.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

Any yet IA and IL have some of the biggest whitetail buck's I've seen... I agree that it doesn't make much sense to be able to hunt yotes w/ a rifle and the next day go out and not take a deer w/ one, but you do not have 400,000 individuals out (on any given day) chasing after yotes.... thats alot of lead, and I know I am glad them Chicago boys aren't toting rifles...

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

TOFER the difference is in number my friend, how many people are out shining yotes at night right now? Around me right now I know of prolly 4-5 yote hunters that do and thats all, but if we were to have a centerfire rifle season, sure all the good resonsible hunter we want to see come out will be out, but so will more of the morons we dont want, and they will be out in large numbers too

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

Another key issue is the fact that we have a great deal of cattle, and livestock in condensed area's......the rifle is a great tool in the proper perspective, but not in my area (Ogle County), too populated with new sub divisions, or cattle, cattle, cattle...........I dont even want to guess what a large Angus bull would cost if he took a stray bullet from my gun.........uggggg................al

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

DOESN'T BOTHER ME TO USE A SHOTGUN.A SLUG DOESN'T CARRY AS FAR AS A BULLET AND SOME AREAS JUST GET TO MANY HUNTERS IN THE WOODS.IT IS A BUNCH OF RIDGES WHERE I SHOTGUN HUNT,BUT TO MANY PEOPLE DOING THINGS LIKE SHOOTING UP HILL KINDA WORRIES ME.IT'S SO THICK WHERE I GO I DON'T THINK YOU COULD SHOOT OVER 80 YARDS UNLESS YOU WERE HUNTING OVER A FIELD.THERE ARE QUITE A FEW CATTLE AROUND MY AREA ALSO.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

I know I'm going to take alot of flack for this but I wouldn't mind seeing a shotgun only season here in Vermont instead of the rifle.

I just think it would be alot safer and would cut down on the road hunting, and force that type of hunter to get into the woods. I also think it give's the deer population better odds if the 200-300 yrd. shot is taken out of the picture.

Remember I was a rifle hunter only until this year when I got to experince the bow and ML. If I can take deer using these methods anyone can and don't see anything wrong with the shotgun only season, but that's only my opinion.

We upstate NY's get the same crap hunters from New York City. You got Donny, Bobby, Danny and Jules, who don't know crap about how to hunt deer or carrya firearm. They can't sit stil for more than an hour walk through the woods like their carrying 100 pounds on their backs!!!!! And another thing, their all liberal socialist's and make the state as a whole look bad!!!!!

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

No I don't live in Illinois but I live about 5-10 minutes from Illinois and have lots of family that live there. You have the stupid Chicago hunters, we have stupid St. Louis hunters. Same difference. Many of the newer slugs and guns claim to be able to shoot deer up to and over 200 yards. Not much different than a rifle. We have lots of people and houses and lots and lots of cows. We have hilly areas and flat areas. Also not much different. We have no more problems because of stray bullets flying around than Illinois.

The only reason I can see for shotgun only is it could help manage the herd but with all the advancements in shotguns and slugs soon there will be little difference between rifle and shotgun for deer hunting.

Actually the only difference I can see is that my rifle doesn't knock the snot out of me like most slug guns will. Many women and children can shoot a .30-30 fine but would be put off by the kick of shotgun slugs.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

I DON'T THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN ANYONE SHOOT A TIGHT PATTERN WITH A SLUG GUN AT TWO HUNDRED YARDS THAT CAN MATCH A 30-06 AT THE SAME DISTANCE.I HAVE SEEN A 7 YEAR OLD KID SHOOT 20 GAUGE SLUGS AND NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE KICK.I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT RIFLES,BUT IF YOU MISS THE TARGET WOULDN'T A SLUG PETER OUT A LOT SOONER THAN A BULLET?I THINK MORE PEOPLE WOULD ROAD HUNT IF RIFLES WERE ALLOWED,TOO.JUST MY OPINIONS,BUT THE CLOSER THE BETTER.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

One of the reasons we have big deer is because we do not allow non-residents to manage our deer herd! This may put some people off, but i am amazed by the number of people from states with a reputation for little bucks that would even pretend to know what is best for Illinois. Folks, it is no accident or coincidence we have the reputation for big bucks we have. Illinois's strict control over the herd, from weapon choice to County by County issuance of permits to tightly controlling the number of non-resident hunters to our two buck limit plays a very big part in our reputation for World Class bucks. Iowa and Ohio only allows shotguns and no one has mentioned them. Seems Illinois gets picked on alot, then people whine they can't afford to hunt Illinois or can't get a permit! Why are people wanting to come here in the first place? Feel free to go to Kansas or Kentucky, they both allow rifles. The rules people don't like produces the bucks that everyone wants to come here and hunt. How ironic! Just my $.02 folks

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

In more than forty years of hunting I have only once taken a shot at a deer more than 100 yards away, and, although my rifle of choice the last 20 some years has been a Weatherby .300 mag, a shotgun or muzzleloader would have made absolutely no difference to the deer I have taken. I think Illinois is doing an outstanding job and should not change a thing.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

I think Illinois is as much hype as it is reality. I could care less about hunting there. We have lots of big deer too, nobody seems to notice, good for me.

I agree most of the rules Illinois has help to grow good deer, I just don't believe the weapon restriction rule has anything to do with it. I believe it is the fact that the gun season usually misses the rut.

Exactly what I was saying in an earlier post. Here in Vermont Rifle season is absolutely cazy with roadside hunters and I think if a shotgun season only was introduced here it would definately help with this problem. Every deer that I have ever taken was 100yrds. or less. I would have no problem giving up my 30-06 for a shotgun.

I for one commend Illinios for their strict deer management...

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

first of all, i would like to say that not ALL chicago hunters are bad...

thats alot of lead, and I know I am glad them Chicago boys aren't toting rifles...

Now that i've said i am a proud Chicago hunter, and i've actually considered stopping completely gun hunting. I cant stand gun season, too many people walking around and stuff. Anyways, im extremely happy that there are no rifles here. I dont care what you guys say, people take 350-400 yard shots w/ rifles... So you can not honestly tell me that it's just as easy with a shotgun. With that said, i agree that we have big bucks for a reason. I used to hunt a 60 acre farm that was surrounded by suburbs and streets and stores and if rifles were allowed, im sure people would take advantage of that and be stupid and use a rifle there. I also hunt my dads backyard where i can see 3 houses from the stand. There are too many places close to chicago or the outskirts that people hunt, and if rifles were allowed it would be chaos. PLEASE NO RIFLES!!!! I'd love to get rid of shotgun season too, but that aint happenin.

Re: RIFLES IN ILLINOIS

I hunt both Ohio and Iowa, there is NO way you could allow some of the big bore rifles here...WAY WAY to many houses and such, In iowa i think the big reason for no rifles there is because of farmer pressure, i kinda agree if im out working in the fields i dont want to wonder who is hunting a mile away, plus there is nothing out there to stop a bullet.

Northforker took the words right out of my mouth. There is no reason why a person should have trouble harvesting a deer here!!!

I think that allowing a rifle season here would be stupid on the DNR's part. We already have plenty of people that can't treat muzzleloaders or shotguns safely, think of what would happen if you stuck a rifle in their hands.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, I don't see anything wrong in allowing the use of a .44 Mag. in a rifle for Deer Hunting in Ill or In.
