Guest bucknutt
i took a nice 10 pt, but after the hit he piled down an embankment, stuck his antlers in the ground and toppled over them before piling up. he broke his antlers off in the ground flush with the g3's. we found the g4's and tips in the ground and nothing shattered, clean break so we can put them back together, but the taxidermist said it would be 50 an hour, probalby at least 100 for the job. any other suggestions? i was just gonna skull mount him, so if nothing else i'll keep the pieces and have him put back together after i get out of school when i have some extra cash. artisticwhitetails
Re: repairing broken antlers Pretty simple to repair, hardest part is getting the fill in around the break stained to match. All you need is a good stiff wire, industral strength epoxy, drill, stain and filler such as Magic or Epoxie Sculpt. All you have to do is bend your wire to follow the shape of the main beam and drill a hole in the middle of both pieces of antler { I drill my holes to a depth of around 4" } Mix your epoxy and fill the hole in the lower beam and place your pre bent and measured rod in to set up. After the epoxy kicks and hardens, fill the hole in the upper beam and slide it on to the rod flush with the break. Use clamps to keep the 2 pieces together untill the epoxy sets up. Fill in around the break with your Magic sculpt and stain to match, your done. I actually use 2 rods on larger sets of horns for extra support but the process is the same. sasksheds
Re: repairing broken antlers AWT has the right idea. But like he said to match the stain to the antler.I use a aged oak min-wax.It works well.If I remember I will get the exact name & brand after work & post it tomorrow.Post some pics of it here so we can see it up close. Guest bucknutt
Re: repairing broken antlers thanks guys, we had heard something about rigging it up with some wire but weren't sure how to go about it. my roommate is the one with the camera and he's already gone home for christmas so i wont' have any pics, not for a while anyways. we'll get some pics once we get it finished though, and it was a clean break, there's no pieces missing or chipped so it should be pretty clean w/o much sculpt. thanks again
toddyboman
Re: repairing broken antlers If they are clean breaks like you said they wont be to bad to fix. Cause like others have said matching the color and making the break not visiable is the hardest part. But do like artisticwhitetails said, thats the easiest way to fix. sasksheds
Re: repairing broken antlers If it is a "really clean" break?Just glue it.The bondo & stain will be "hard to match. One of my mounts with a drop tine fell off the wall broke.I just glued it & unless you really look you cant notice it.I cant tell you much without the pics.
