repairing broken antlers

i posted this in taxidermy, but figured it'd get more looks here. here's the deal:

i took a nice 10 pt, but after the hit he piled down an embankment, stuck his antlers in the ground and toppled over them before piling up. he broke his antlers off in the ground flush with the g3's. we found the g4's and tips in the ground and nothing shattered, clean break so we can put them back together, but the taxidermist said it would be 50 an hour, probalby at least 100 for the job. any other suggestions? i was just gonna skull mount him, so if nothing else i'll keep the pieces and have him put back together after i get out of school when i have some extra cash.

Re: repairing broken antlers

if it was me and i was just doing a euro mount i would skin and dress the head out myself, boil it , and try to epoxy them back on myself. do you do your own skinning and processing? doesn't take much to clean the head out and boil the skull and antlers. we have an extra pot for our turkey frier that we boil racks in to plack them, and we did one euro mount, turned out nice

Re: repairing broken antlers

I would attempt to fix them myself. Being that you have both parts, bet you could take a small drill bit and drill both ends very carefully just far enough in to get a small piece of stiff wire in. Then take your piece of wire and put inside where you drilled out with some epoxy in the holes and glue them together.

Re: repairing broken antlers

OK THIS IS HOW TO FIX EM IF YOU WANT TO, TAKE A SMALL DRILL BIT DRILL A HOLE IN EACH PIECE ABOUT A HALF INCH DEEP, THEN TAKE A PIECE OF GALVANIZED WIRE (IT WONT RUST, THERE IS MOISTURE IN ANTLERS) USE AN EPOXY BASED GLUE AND GLUE TOGETHER, YOU WILL NEED TO PUT DOWNWARD PRESSURE ON THE ANTLER SO THE EPOXY GLUE WONT EXPAND THE ANTLERS APART, THEN YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE SOME CLAY OR EPOXY(WHITE OR NATURAL IN COLOR) AND HIDE THE SEAM, THEN TRY TO COLOR MATCH SO YOU CANT SEE WHERE THE ANTLER WAS BROKEN. THAT IS HOW I DO IT WHEN A CUSTOMER WANTS BROKEN TINES REPAIRED AT LEAST YOU HAVE BOTH PIECES, I USUALLY HAVE TO REBUILD THE WHOLE TINE!!!
