college is so frustrating

So yesterday I got home from school and had two new letters from two different schools, one which I had applied to. I read that one first and it was my acceptance letter to Hocking College, which if you don't know is a very good Nature/Technical school. So I was pretty happy and figured thats where I would be going. Then I read the other one from Defiance University that said they were interested in me for soccer scholarships after they saw me play at a recruiting session two weeks ago. Now heres my dilema: Do I go to Hocking because thats where I think I will get the best education on Wildlife Management (my major) and play on an intramural team, or do I go to Defiance who doesn't have my major and play soccer and go to school for virtually no money? It just figures too, I had no idea two days ago, now it's time to decide what one out of the two..sorry about the long babbling, just wanted to vent..

Re: college is so frustrating

Tough choice...if you go for the scholarship, what will you do with the education/degree from that college?

Won't it just cost you money to transfer to a college to get the degree you want? confused.gif

Re: college is so frustrating

a lot would depend on your financial situation and how strong of a desire you have to play college soccer. You could always go to Defiance and play soccer and then once you graduate go back and get a post graduate degree in wildlife management.

However if you don't have a strong desire to play college ball and can financially afford to go to Hocking then that is what I'd do. Your just talking about 4 years compared to having a degree that will give you the opportunity to do what you want for the rest of your life.

good luck with your decision. I had a very similiar decision when I was your age.

Re: college is so frustrating

My piece of advice - go for the degree you want. I went to college planning to major in Athletic Training. College decided they weren't going to get it accredited so they dropped the major. I switched to outdoor ed. as I didn't want to transfer. Now I'm not really sorry I did, but I graduated in August and the desire to do Athletic Training is still strong, yet I'm paying loans and the government probably won't give me much financial aid for another B.S. in Athletic Training. A Master's...maybe but there aren't really any college close enough that I can commute to for Athletic Training and now I almost wish I had just transferred in the first place for Athletic Training so I could afford to have that degree. You can still play soccer at the one school, just not the college team and although the other college will give you a free ride to play on their team...you will be balancing that and your studies the next 4 years, but if you can handle it, good for you. Just my 2 cents:) Let us know what you decide!

You're not even in college yet, and you're complaining about it already? grin.gif

Hmmmmm, tough one. I'd be inclined to take the full ride with a degree in something like biology. There are many degrees that might not be in the exact field you want, but you can get close.

College is expensive, take the money. cool.gif

I agree with Chris here. Major in Bio or something similar that you can transfer most of your credits and get the degree you want after you get your BA. A full ride or even partial is very nice. Plus playing college ball is something you will never forget. I know, I did it and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Some good advice here. Honestly think this is what I would do given the opportunity.

I would go for the free education and a biology degree. Then plan on getting a Masters in your preferred field. The Masters will give you a great boost as compared to people you will be competing for jobs with who only have BS degrees.

Another thing to consider is most people change their majors at some point in time during college anyway.

Good Luck,

I think this is sound advice.

If money is not an object, go to the school with the major you want to do. If money is an object, play soccer and get a degree and THEN go for the wildlife major. Every degree basically has the same "well rounded" BS classes. They should transfer.

Totally agree, get a broad biology degree, then if you still want to do wildlife management that is a pretty specialized field which in most cases only hires people with masters degrees anyway. I would get the 4 yr bio degree for free, then get a specialized masters in WM

Re: college is so frustrating

I'm finding myself in the same dilema pretty much. I'm applied at Mississippi State and will get like a half scholarship because of my ACT score(27), but i want to play baseball. I've kinda had one full scholarship offer from one D1 school but it's not really the type of school i want to go to. My decision probably want be made til April at least.

Re: college is so frustrating

A tough choice on your part. I made several in my lifetime and it always came down to the money. I worked at a jop i did not like for over 30 years because of the money and the perks that came with it. Always wonder what would have happened if i picked the jop i really wanted. Sorry, i know that's not much help for you to decide, but which ever way you go, will effect the rest of your life. crazy.gif
