Guest ronin
Re: leupoldvxIII I have the VX111 in 6X24X50 and 3X9X40. I am a huge VXIII fan and believe them to be exceptionally well made. The warranty is also the best in the business. The only drawback is the price. You can get similar performance from the upper echelon Nikon and Bushnells which are not so pricey. The difference, IMO, boils down to customer service and Leupold is probably the best in the business.
scrubhunter
Re: leupoldvxIII I too was a big Loopy fan until I looked through my first Bushnell elite 4200! I haven't looked back since. They have better glass, warranty is just as good and the price is alot better.
ousoonerfan22
Re: leupoldvxIII If the price is close to the Zeiss Conquest then you should also check them out.Go to Bass Pro or your nearest sporting goods store and look through the Leupold,Zeiss and Bushnell. I like the Zeiss.
AJ
Re: leupoldvxIII I too prefer the Zeiss Conquest over the Leupold. While Leupold has a great warranty, I have had too many problems with them in the past. I doubt I will buy another one.

If you are spending around 500$ for a scope the VariXIII isn't on par compared to a Zeiss conquest. I own both & this just happened to me last weekend. Saturday was doe day here in SC. We can legally sit 1 hour after dark to hunt. In most states its half & hour maybe it is where you hunt? So I decide to take my Rem 7400 to take 2 does. The gun is topped with a Leupold VariX III 3.5-10x50. The official sunset was 5:15. At about 5:55 6 doe came out about 100 yards from me. I raised the scope to find them & it was like looking down a black hole. I couldn't even see the crosshairs. The very next evening under the exact same weather conditions, the same 6 deer entered the field at 180 yards. I had my 06 bolt topped with a Zeiss 3.5-10x50, it was 7 minutes after 6 & I could see them exceptionally well. If they were 100 yards or less I could have taken any of them easily with that scope but it wasn't legal to shoot does on Sunday. My advice is to get a Conquest or Nikon. I use to also be a big fan of Leupold but they are way over priced for their performance in really low light. I guess if you hunt where its half hour past sunset you're good to go, but compared to a Zeiss, I believe Leupold is over priced compared to the performance that Zeiss gives for roughly the same money. And don't worry about the Zeiss conquest being a foreign scope. It is sorta, the parts are made in Germany but the scope is assembled right here in the good old USA by Americans. iron buck
Re: leupoldvxIII [ QUOTE ] i am thinkin of gettin a vxIII 4.5x14x50 to go on my new 300 wby vanguard anyone use this scope all comments appreciated [/ QUOTE ] The bigger & heavier the scope, the more it is effected by recoil. A 300 wby is a pretty stout kicker in a light weight rifle. I have a 300 wby mark V. I use a Leupod VArix-III 2.5-8x on mine & could not be happier. I own mostly Leupold scopes. UNlike AJ's experience mine have proven to be rock solid & reliable. Unlike my other experiences with makes like simmons, tasco & burris. I am at the point where I will only use Leupod scopes. I am happy with the clarrity, reliability & the price. I do not mind paying more for quality. I have never tried the conquest. Now that they make a 2.5-8x I may get one. I view that power range as the best going for a general purpose hunting rig. And I also preffer 40mm max on the objective end. I just never could see any real benefit to the "hubble" look on a hunting rifle during legal shooting hours. I have never been hindered by not being able to pick out game & shoot because i use smaller objectives. But then............if you pay more for quality glass that is one of the benefits. scrubhunter
Re: leupoldvxIII Guys I'm not trying to sound like a broken record but if you haven't looked through an elite 4200 you really should give it a shot. I searched hard and long and read alot of info on optics forums before I would buy into it myself and could kick myself for not trying it sooner. The top guys on all the forums swore that the elite 4200 was right there with the Zeiss and at around $440 it can't be beat. It's guaranteed magnum proof and has the warranty to back it up. It also has the optional firefly reticle which I can attest to works great. I have the 2.5-10X50 and absolutely love it, so much so I'll buy another for my next rifle. I know the name Bushnell screams "cheap" to alot of you, it did me as well, but this is no ordinary Bushnell scope. Like I said, do some searching and you will see, it's ranked above the loopy, Nikon Monarch, and Burris and right with the Zeiss but costs less than them all. TexasDeerHunter
Re: leupoldvxIII I shoot VX II's and have no problems. I use them on my .223, .260., 30-06, and on my old .300 RUM. Never an issue.
Guest ronin
Re: leupoldvxIII I like the 4200. I have one and think it is great. However, my Nikon Monarch is a bit clearer, IMO. Interestingly, I bought the new Simmons Setec Master and it is just as clear as all my top of the line scopes. It lacks a little in light transfer but only very little. I haven't used it enought to know how it holds up, though. Still, $150 for super clear glass is a nice thing.
LETMGROW
Re: leupoldvxIII I am with you ronin. While often overlooked or down upon the Simmons Atec Master series scopes are one of the best buys on the market today. I have compared them to much more expensive scopes and found them to be as good or better clarity. I have used Atecs since their intro. with absolutely no problems whatsoever. tped
Re: leupoldvxIII I have a bunch of Leupolds and Nikons and I like the clarity of the Nikons better. Next serious scope will probablybe another Nikon or the Zeis Conquest. I have also heard good things about the Elite 4200 from some friends that shoot them also. scrubhunter
Re: leupoldvxIII I like the Aetec also but only on light recoil rifles. My .300 RUM yanked the guts out of two of them.
bowana
Re: leupoldvxIII I'm going to go with the VariXIII. They hold up better than any other scope I have used. I own Swarovski and Leica as well as Leupold LPS, VariXIII. I don't currently own a Zeiss conquest, but have in the past. They are all great optics!!. Clarity in a scope is a matter of how much you want to pay for coatings. Also the size of the Objective and tube play a part. The 4.5x14x50 is an outstanding choice. I have one with the smaller objective on my Weatherby 270.
Guest happylilcuss
Have you ever tried schmidt & Bender, Nightforce nxs, or us optics???? All of those scopes will outperfrom any other scope mentioned in this thread. IMHO
bowana
I own 6 Leupold VariXIII scopes, 1 VariXII, and 2 LPS. I have owned almost every scope manufactured in the last 15 years. If your going to stand hunt out east then the 4200, or Nikon might save you some money (they probably are the best value). If you intend on hunting out west where your rifle gets banged around a bit, I would go with the Leupold. They are clear and sturdy. I once dropped my Weatherby 338-378 during a fall in deep snow outside of Plains, Montana. Didn't find the rifle till next spring. The scope took an awful bang. Took it off sent it in. One week later I had a new scope. I have NEVER had any problems with Leupold scopes other than this issue. But, I also won't argue with the German/Austrian quality and craftsman ship of good glass, because they build the best in the business. The good thing is whatever you choose, you won't be wrong.
