Iowa info please

Myself and two buddies are starting to plan for an Iowa bowhunt. We should draw tags for 2007, we have two points. We have found an outfitter in zone 5 that we may book with. But I am trying to look at other options. We will look at any outfitter or a DIY hunt on public or private land. If anyone can give me any information on public land or point me to a quality outfitter that would be great. Also I may drive out a few times this summer and try to secure some private land for a DIY hunt.

Thanks for any info.

Re: Iowa info please

Zone 5 happens to be the zone that the Albia buck was killed in ... I am not sure 2 points will cut it ... I would maybe look at SW Iowa or Se Iowa the middle part is very hard to draw in ... as far as public land goes Se Iowa has a huge sttate forest you can hunt and SW Iowa also has a lot of public area around Red Oak you can contact the DNR about public land and deer counts and they will be more then helpful ... also there are several outfitters in SW Iowa who hunt MO also so maybe you can look at a combo tag for Iowa and MO double your chances ... GL I hope you are successful in your draw ... BTW our DNR officer told us that it would take at least 5 points to draw in zone 5 but you could get lucky ...

Re: Iowa info please

I've drawn zone 5 archery everyother year for the past 6 years. I always draw with one point. I hope the 5 point statement is an exageration. We hunt between Centerville and Leon on some private ground. There's not many big dear in this area.

Re: Iowa info please

We applied for zone 5 last year, but not sure if we have to apply for zone 5 again this year, or if we can apply for a different one. The reason we picked that area is because we know a couple of guys who have bowhunted with Jack Schuler who runs Schulers Guide service in Indianola. They usually do pretty well with him. One of them took a 150 inch buck this year with Jack.

We are willing to look at other areas. Someone told me to check out Allamakee (sp) county. Not sure where to look. Just trying to get some input.

Thanks for the info.
