300 Win Mag or 300 WSM?

Ok guys, I'm in the Christmas mood of buying stuff now & I have an excuse to buy another rifle grin.gif!!!! Yesterday my girlfriend just got a letter & a bunch of photos from her dad in Wyoming. He's an avid hunter & fisherman. He lives in the middle of no where in Wyoming & says the hunting is unreal.

I want to buy a 300. I own a 7mm mag, but want a 30 calibur magnum but I don't want any of the super mags. .375 338 ect ect... My mind is made up about that.

I'm leaning towards a Rem or Tikka 300 WSM. I had a guy tell me at the rifle range a while back NOT to buy a 300 wsm or any short magnums because he said the high pressure from the round will eventually cause damage to the shortened action of the rifle. Is this a bunch or bunk or is it true?

Re: 300 Win Mag or 300 WSM?

This guy is on crack. The WSM is using the same pressure as any other belted magnum and some standard cartridges. As far as which one to get, its up to you, do you want a short action or a long action? They are ballistically even and in the field, you will not see a performance edge by either one.

Re: 300 Win Mag or 300 WSM?

In fact, here is a list of SAAMI maximum PSI pressures for many different cartridges:

22 Hornet = No PSI Std.

222 Remington = 50,000

223 Remington = 55,000

22-250 Remington = 65,000

220 Swift = No PSI Std.

223 WSSM = 65,000

243 Winchester = 60,000

6mm Remington = 65,000

257 Roberts +P = 58,000

25-06 Remington = 63,000

260 Remington = 60,000

6.5 x 55 Swede = 45,000

264 Win Mag = 64,000

270 WSM = 65,000

270 Winchester = 65,000

7 x 30 Waters = 45,000

7mm - 08 Rem = 61,000

284 Winchester = 56,000

7mm Mauser = 51,000

7mm WSM = 65,000

280 Remington = 60,000

7mm Rem Mag = 61,000

7mm Wby Mag = 65,000

7mm STW = 65,000

7mm Rem Ultra Mag = 65,000

30 Carbine = 40,000

7.62 x 39 = 45,000

30-30 Winchester = 42,000

303 British = 49,000

300 Savage 47,000

308 Winchester = 62,000

300 Rem Short UM = 65,000

300 WSM = 65,000

30-06 Springfield = 60,000

300 H & H = No PSI Std.

300 Win Mag = 64,000

300 Wby Mag = 65,000

300 Rem Ultra Mag = 65,000

8mm Mauser = 35,000

8mm Rem Mag = 65,000

32 Win Special = 42,000

338 Win Mag = 64,000

338 Rem Ultra Mag = 65,000

338 Lapua = No PSI Std.

375 H & H = 62,000

375 Rem Ultra Mag = 65,000

416 Rem Mag = 65,000

444 Marlin = 42,000

45-70 Government = 28,000

The cartridges that have No PSI listed are only measured in CUP which is copper units of pressure and do not corrolate to PSI directly.
