Re: How much theft???

We've had 7 stands stolen over the years Andrea. mad.gif

We managed to get 2 back one year, when we did a little neighbourhood scouting and found one stand hanging in a tree in someones back yard. We did some door knocking, and one of the nieghbour boys ratted the other two kids out. They denied taking both stands, so I just told them if it didn't show up in a few hours, no more Mr. Nice guy, and I'd get the police involved.

Magically, the 2nd stand showed up too...LOL

All 3 boys were involved in the theft. We just got lucky finding those two stands.

The only way we were able to find those 2 was because one of the nieghbours to the property, said they saw 2 boys with pellet guns out that way a few weeks back, so we just figured they must live close by somewhere, and so we took a walk through the nieghbours farm that backs onto a little sub-division. That's where we spotted the first stand in the tree.

On a side note. Both of these kids parents were as lame as lame could be. It was the kid who didn't have the stands, but was there when the theft occured, who was most helpful. He was a Christian kid too, and he felt really, really ashamed.

Re: How much theft???

I've had 2 things stolen...

The first was my Summit Viper ($230). I was hunting my normal property and shot a doe in the evening I chose to leave my stand and drag the doe out as I was coming back the next evening. Next evening it was gone. It ended up being stolen by my "friend" that I was hunting with. We had hunted together for several years what I wasn't aware of at the time was he was going through alot of problems. I found out he was taking meds by him showing up late to the truck one night. I asked if he got anything and he told me no, his meds made him dizzy and when he was coming down the ladder he didn't know if he passed out or slipped, just knew when he came to he was flat on his back looking at the stars in the sky. That year he ended up losing his marriage and his job. In the midst of all that he evidently had gotten jealous as I was having my second good hunting season in a row while he wasn't seeing much.

I pretty much knew he took it but never blamed him for it. Once I found out all he was going through I let him know I'ld help him out any way I could. He left town the next spring, heading out to go back to college, he stopped by my house and pulled my stand out of the back of his truck. He said he "found" it at the property close to where we cross the creek. You could tell it had been stored in someones house or garage for over a year not out in a field somewhere. But I wasn't going to bust his chops over the whole thing, it evidently got to him enough that he delivered it eye to eye, so I thanked him for finding it and wished him the best.

The last year I hunted that property there was one other guy that hunted it, we got along just fine. Well he brought a friend out with him a couple times and his friend decided to steal one of my hang-ons. I found it the next spring when I offered to take down all of the stands for the new property owner. THe friend had stolen it and put it up in a different spot on the same property, so needless to say I got it back.

Having something stolen is one of the worst feelings there can be IMO, I've been fortunate enough to recover both of my loses which I feel extremely fortunate about bacause I know that happens few and far between.

Sister had a ladder stand stolen opening day of season. she sat there opening morning. we left for lunch and were the last one out of the public parking area. came back 2hrs later and it was gone. we were over a mile from the parking area. we pretty much know who stole the stand, the same people who shot in our direction 5 or 6 times during the weekend even after we yelled at them. (WE WERE WEARING BLAZE ORANGE HATS AND VESTS)!!!!

How well do steel cables and locks work?? I mean , if they really wanted it, couldn't they just use bolt-cutters??

[/ QUOTE ]

All of our stands were chained, locked and Lag bolted (1 large lag bolt) to the tree. A thief, if he really wants your stand, just climbs up, checks out what tools he needs, and comes back later. crazy.gif

The only stands we had that we're chained, locked and lag bolted, were the ones we got back ...figure that out..LOL

Re: How much theft???

I had a chair in my blind on our land stolen. I have a feeling who did it. Some reason this guy can't understand the meaning of a "property line" because he shot a deer on our land 30 yards behind our dogs and he had to have sent those slugs flying straight at our house and dogs.

That's about all my bad luck. I don't use stands too often, though.

had all my guns stolen 3 times....from my house...got one back but it was taken again 2 weeks later...had my deer heads taken also....never got them back and had a climber stand taken and caught the guy walking out of the woods with it ..he served time as it wasnot his first time to steal...

(my dad held him while i got the game warden out)so i got it back but was after the season as they had to keep the evadence for the courts to prosicute....

Re: How much theft???

That is too bad Andrea. Everything we have is on private property either our own, or our neighbors where no one else should be. Have some concerns about my climber and my cameras. Most of our stands are homemade and are pretty heavy. They would be a little tough for someone to steal. I do have a python cable lock on one of my cameras, the leaf river, but the other doe snot yet have one. It will have when I move it closer to the property lines.

Re: How much theft???

All that we have ever had stolen was a 35mm DeerCam. It was on the Government Land that borders our land. We have an idea of who stole it but there is no way to prove it. We use the biggest log chains we can find for all of our stands. And we always take our Summits back with us after every hunt.

Well sorry to hear about the theft. It's sad that hard workin' hunters have to worry about all the stuff they worked hard to get getting stolen.
