Are you happy?

Re: Are you happy?

My season has had some great ups and downs. The up would be being able to go to Kentucky and hunt some of the most beautiful land I have ever seen.

The down would be, while up there, I had a shooting house turn over with me and I broke my leg and tore up my knee at the same time. Had surgery on my leg and knee on the 19th of November. I go back to the doctor on the 27th of December and I hope he lets me get out a little. If he does, my season may not be all lost.......because the rut is fixing to kick in full swing down here and we have one more month of season left!

Re: Are you happy?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my hunting, but the bad draught we had really put a hurtin' on the horn crop. I haven't seen a single buck that I thought would make 160. Numbers are still good, and I'm seeing plenty of mature deer, they just don't have big horns. Oh well, maybe next year we'll get some rain and things will be back to normal.

Re: Are you happy?

Been a lot of ups and downs the past three years here. This is the third year of major disappointment for me with my seasons. Had a promising start with a really good 10 pointer showing and almost giving me a shot with a group of 4 other bucks near the end of the first archery segment.

Last season I was really happy with how things came together was the 2003 season.

Re: Are you happy?

I didn't get to hunt near as much as I usually do due to family issues. Only bow hunted 3 times and rifle hunted 4 times but my 4th rifle hunt was a blast. I was able to harvest my 2nd largest buck ever--and had my daughters with me--so all in all I'm pretty happy:

Now that's happiness to a daddy

Re: Are you happy?

I actually had a good season...even though I got skunked!

I finally saw a real nice buck on new property I have permission to hunt.

I learned the way the deer travel through the area using the availible cover to their advantage.

On property I have hunted before I learned Tons of Information because I hunted there most of the season.

I only hunted there when the winds were favorable and saw more deer there then ever before!

While I'm kicking myself in the butt for not being more aggressive in my stand placement this year and getting close enough for an ethical bow shot...I Know where the stands will be Next Season wink.gif

This year I got Schooled...next season they will ride in the back of my Bus grin.gif

Re: Are you happy?

My dad and I had a great season stating off in September when my Dad took 2 (1 doe and a 3pt) with the bow. Then I followed up with my largest buck ever in October. Then finished up during our gun season with 5 doe opening morning ans another slightly smaller buck but still very nice on that Monday before Thanksgiving. We ended up filling 9 of our 10 tags and managed to hunt over 45 days in 2 and a half months. I still have 1 archery antlerless only tag left, but it's not looking like I'm going to make it out again. Freezer full of meat, time spent with my Dad and my daughters in the stand, absolutely priceless.

Re: Are you happy?

I am very happy with this season and happy with my past seasons. I thank God every time I am able to hunt and have been blessed to harvest 6 deer so far this year and have several weeks of hunting left. One is a trip to Mexico to try my hand at taking a 150in buck or better. If I ever loose the desire to hunt ( which I can't imagine ever happening ) I think I would be just as happy to help my children or others enjoy the outdoors and hunting. This year is far from over and I am already looking forward to next year.

Re: Are you happy?

I too got skunked this season but had 3 misses and wounded one doe. I was fortunate enough to get 4 shots off at deer, but screwed up that one shot when I wounded that doe. She was shot the next morning so she isn't still walking around wounded.

Next year I can gun hunt and I'll be tearing them up real good.

Re: Are you happy?

Im more than happy ive been in the woods what more can i ask for?

Ive had more chances with my bow this year than ever before. Ive just not had bow up in tree in time or they just wont get out from behind that tree. I was lucky enough to get a nice buck this year again. Thank the Lord. And i still have a week to bow hunt along with a 3 day rifle hunt. What more could i ask for?

Great season all in all for the team here.

Re: Are you happy?

Iam happy with my season, I have harvested 3 deer so and have 3 weeks left to bow hunt. Best part about my season was I got a handicaped hunter back in the woods and he got his first deer.

Re: Are you happy?

Yes and no. Anyone that reads thing I would love to hear any and all thoughts on what I'm about to write. When this season started in was on pins and needles. I couldn't wait, it felt like my first season all over again. Four days into the season I harvested a doe, and she became a gift to the land owner. At the time it happened you would have thought I took a world record. On 10/11 I harvested my largest archery buck. I was so pumped I couldn't talk to my hunting partner to tell him what happened, and I had trouble putting away my hunting gear before getting out the flash light before tracking him. What a rush. I was pumped for a few days after that. Then my season changed. I harvested 3 more antler-less deer to date, and not once did I get anywhere near as excited. The only joy I got out of those harvests, was seeing I hit where I aimed. At this time I really wish that I felt as I did when I began deer hunting. In those days I would come unglued to the sight of ANY deer, but as of late the harvest isn't the event that it once was. I worry that I am becoming a killer, not a hunter. Im not sure what to think.

Re: Are you happy?

Marc, every year is a great year as long as you are in the woods with the leaves under you and not above you!

Remember the highlights and celebrate! The doe contest at Brians. The day you took your daughter in the stand with you. You got to enjoy the view as Mother Nature painted the hillside red, yellow, & orange. You managed to put two deer in the freezer to feed your family. And so on and on..... Remember killing a buck is only a small part of the overall equation. It's kinda like what Realtree says, "Family, Friends, and the Great Outdoors" What else more could you ask for?

Am I happy?? Heck yeah!! I got to hunt with my family one more time and God willing we will all get together again next year.

Re: Are you happy?

My season was not good at all. I spent a lot of time and energy on food plots, hanging stands, etc. I was all fired up for bow season but family issues arose in late summer. I went thru the first and will be my only divorce. Very tough to get into any spirit, even hunting which up until now was my passion. I have gone to the stand several times and just can't stay. Too much time for my mind to just run and I can't keep my concentration on why I am there. The times I have put the time in, the deer are just not there as they usually are, thus adding to my frustration. A good hunting season is what I needed but it just ain't happening. My season is not over yet but as I type this, I could be out there doing what i used to never miss no matter what. I hope things are better by turkey season... Thanks for letting me vent!!!

Re: Are you happy?

My season turned out to be eventful and fun. I had my first bowkill in the middle of october (little 6 point). Then i got two deer during the two week rifle season up here (a doe fawn and nice 8 point). Then i finally finished off my season with a 155 lb field dressed doe just last saturday with my bow. I had a lot of fun, with it being my first year hunting with a bow and am looking forward to next season.

Re: Are you happy?

Not happy this year. To Busy to hunt productively. Didn't see much either when I did go so that made it more frustrating. Starting to plan for next year now so that I have at least a few whole days to hunt. Heading out to scout a few new spots after christmas.

[/ QUOTE ] Very good points Joe. I guess it's frustration setting in on me smirk.gif. This year we put in a lot of time with land improvements and plots and let a lot of different bucks walk and to not see many deer or any good deer just got to me. The weather was lousy to say the least and I want to know where the 30+ bucks have gone that we have let go the last two years. confused.gif(FRUSTRATION)
