Re: EXPLOSION!!!!!

COOL...I remember once as a child...I was gettin ready for school and watched the shuttle lift off..I got on the shcool bus and about a mile or two down the road I seen the smoke trail from where it had gone up...I did not realize what it was until I got to school and the teacher showed us a tape of the launch (same one I watched at home) and then showed the local news showing the smoke trail!!! That was cool.

Imagine what direction all the deer scattered to!!

It is kind of loud! LOL!! I have never the shuttle, but have heard my share of planes breaking the sound barrier!

Sonic boom is a sonic boom. I've heard both planes and the shuttle coming in. I can't tell a difference. I remember the first time I heard the shuttle, I though a truck had hit the side of the shop where I was.

Re: EXPLOSION!!!!!

Hmmmmm, I've heard plenty of the jets around Eglin breaking the sound barrier, but this was MUCH LOUDER.

One time we were fishing about 20 miles offshore when some jets broke the sound barrier. We never saw them, but we just KNEW we were being bombed. LOL. There was more than one jet so they each made their own "BOOM-BOOM-BOOM" as they went over. I screamed!!! blush.gifgrin.gif

Re: EXPLOSION!!!!!

Might be that I just can't tell the difference, or it was a proximity thing to the cause of the boom. My wife says I'm deaf as a door knob anyway blush.gif I've fought a lot of fire around Eglin and I've heard the jets down there too. One thing that I've heard but I don't know if it is true....military pilots along the coast aren't supposed to go super until they are out over the open water.

Re: EXPLOSION!!!!!

They DON'T always follow the rules !!!

Back when I was in the construction business, I was building a house on Fort Morgan Beach, west of Gulf Shores, AL.

Pilings 10 ft. out of the ground, 10 ft. ceilings. 6/12 pitch roof. The ridge beam was @ 36 ft. from the ground.

The Blue Angels CONSTANTLY harassed us for two weeks, using that stretch of beach as a practice run. Subsonic at 75 to 100 ft., directly above our heads !! They would go about a half mile down the beach, 200 yds. offshore, @ 100 - 150 ft. altitude, and go supersonic. EARSPLITTING!!!

FAA wouldn't do anything, finally called base CO at Eglin, said my next three calls would be to my Senator, my Congressional Rep., and the TV news. That got it stopped.

That was a LOOONG time ago, when the population down there wasn't nearly as thick as it is now.

We were approx. 20 miles offshore, so I guess they were in their right to scare the crap out of us. grin.gif

Re: EXPLOSION!!!!!

Where I grew up in Ocala, about an hour and a half from KSC, you could hear the sonic boom really good, the difference between a jet and the shuttle though is there is always two booms with the shuttle. Whenever they launched, I could look out my bedroom window or go in the front yard and see the shuttle going up, it was a lot easier to see it though from the place my grandparents lived at the time, it was out of town and on 40 acres, so you got a more open view. I remember watching a night launch from my bedroom also.
